UPDATE
We made our goal. Thank you! Anything donated over $400 will be used to honor Chaka's memory in an additional way. Exactly how will be determined based on the total amount of money donated. Some possibilities are a one time scholarship in his name, or possibly a memorial bench in addition to the tree. We will share how we are going to use the money once the campaign has completed.

Chaka Hughes was more than just a member of our university mail services; he was a cherished friend, a bright smile, and a positive presence that touched many lives every day.
To honor Chaka’s memory and his lasting impact on all of us, we are raising funds to plant a memorial tree on the Detroit Mercy campus. Alongside the tree, a plaque will be placed to commemorate his life and the joy he brought to our community.
Remembering Chaka
Chaka’s warmth and kindness resonated with everyone he met. Here are some heartfelt memories shared by those who knew him best:
We were so lucky to have had Chaka as a part of our Detroit Mercy community. Since he delivered our mail, MANY of us got to see him each day and be blessed with his smile and positive attitude.
Chaka was an absolute gem of a human being. Always smiling, bringing joy and making people feel valued in his presence. He was such a proud dad; I loved hearing his tips on raising a son. His twin girls made his heart sing. Chaka would talk about anything, laugh & make jokes to lighten the mood, and really took the time to let you know he was listening. Such a thoughtful, genuine, and fun-loving spirit.
Chaka was my friend for 20+ years and my heart is broken. There is no one like Chaka. I will miss his positive energy, his love for music & sports. I will miss our talks about life & our fights about Michigan/Michigan State. I will miss so much about this beautiful person. I'm so grateful to have been able to see him every day & to call him my friend. Every time Chaka left my office, I yelled out that I loved him. He laughed & I know I embarrassed him, but I didn't care. I am so glad he knew how I felt. I'm sending constant prayers for his family, for the love of his life, for "little Chaka" and his precious girls who he adored. Chaka loved life & will always hold a place in my heart.
My heart hurts knowing we will never see you walking the halls of UD Mercy/Dental singing, talking with everyone and that smiling face. UD Mercy has lost an extraordinary person. You and Marvin were brothers. I don't know who I can talk with now regarding the TV shows we both watch.
