Thank you to all who have so generously given gifts to support the Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop endowment fund. We've set a stretch goal of $25,000 — because of the campaign's momentum. Plus — writers are overachievers!

The Project

The Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop is building its endowment to help keep the workshop affordable for writers. Registration fees cover less than half the cost of operating the biennial workshop. For every dollar raised, an anonymous donor will match it, up to $10,000.

Who We Are

The Writer magazine named the Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop the best writing conference in Ohio and "THE conference for humor writers." Since the first workshop in 2000, literally thousands of writers, inspired by Erma's humor and humanity, have gathered to laugh and learn from the likes of Dave Barry, Gail Collins, Phil Donahue, Nancy Cartwright, Alan Zweibel, Lisa Scottoline and more. It's the only workshop in the country devoted to both humor and human interest writing.

The Impact

One writer dubs the workshop the “Woodstock of Humor.” Another calls it a “utopia” for writers. Many say it’s life changing. Empowering. And, yes, even magical. Writers tell us they gained the confidence, writing know-how and connections to publish books, write essays for The New York Times and other national outlets, perform stand-up comedy, secure speaking engagements and submit work for anthologies. University of Dayton students have been inspired by the presenters and attendees they’ve met from across the nation.

What Your Gifts Will Do

If we had to charge all our expenses to workshop attendees, our registration fee would more than double. That’s why we need your support. Earnings from the endowment supplement our operating budget, allowing us to keep the registration fee low and to bring in national-caliber presenters. Every gift, no matter the size, makes a difference.

Be an Erma champion and spread the news! Please help us honor Erma's legacy and inspire writers for generations to come.

You have our heartfelt gratitude.

DC Stanfa Memorial Writers' Award

Thank you for sharing and donating to the Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop through this crowdfunding page!

Some exciting news to share: The Erma Bombeck Writers’ Workshop is collaborating with the late DC Stanfa’s family to help writers with financial need attend the popular biennial workshop at the University of Dayton. The award honors DC, an author, humorist and longtime attendee, who died unexpectedly in January.

The crowdfunding page raising funds for the DC Stanfa Memorial Writers' Award is accepting donations today, October 20, through Giving Tuesday on November 30, 2021.

Time to Stretch!

Erma champs, we have just met our initial crowdfunding goal, so, with two days left in our campaign to build the workshop's endowment, we stretch higher. Can we top $10,000? Why not? If you haven't done so already, please considering creating an #UNselfie and sharing it through social media. Encourage gifts at

A Note of Gratitude as We Enter the Home Stretch

A heartfelt note of gratitude to our three dozen supporters to date who have stepped up on both coasts, Erma’s home state of Ohio and a number of other states to support our first crowdfunding campaign to benefit the workshop's endowment fund. A special thanks to Fran Evans, Bob Daley, Tracy Beckerman, Keith Stewart and Mindy Hoffbauer who issued or met challenges. With this kind of early support (and love!), we will meet or shoot past our fundraising goal after #GivingTuesday (Dec. 3). Please consider creating an #UNSelfie to share on social media on Tuesday — and encourage others to give. For details on how to do this, click here.

The Power of Belief

The Power of Belief

As we approach the halfway point in our campaign to raise $10,000 for the workshop's endowment, Erma Champion Fran Evans has stepped forward with the promise to match every dollar, up to $2,500. "There's magic and power in the Erma Bombeck Writers' Workshop. The power of belief. The power of someone else believing in you.The power of you believing in yourself," says Evans, former vice president for advancement at the University of Dayton and a believer in the power of this workshop since Day One.

Thank you to all who believe in that power.
