Ceramics: Introduction to Wheel Throwing

Learn the basics of ceramics, or build on your understanding of wheel throwing including wedging, forming cylinders, open forms, flat forms, and some finishing techniques. Classes will include demonstrations of techniques with time to practice and develop an understanding of how we use the potter’s wheel for expression in clay. We will create and fire a mug, bowl, and plate by the end of the class. This class is geared towards those with little to no experience with clay.
Ages: Open to any students and adults, ages 13 and up. (Class must meet a minimum enrollment of 5 to run.)
Dates: July 28 - August 7, No Class August 1 (10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.)
Location: Trinity Campus, Perkinson Arts Center, Wilton Visual Arts Studio
Cost: $400- Materials and firing included. Any tools required will be provided, but feel free to bring your own pottery tools if you already have some.

Bio: Josh Singleton graduated from West Virginia University with a BFA in ceramics and has been a part of the Richmond clay community for six years. Initially, he pursued chemistry in his academic studies, but changed to a fine arts major upon discovering ceramics. He found ceramics to be the perfect blend of culture, science, and creativity. Over the years, he has taught ceramics and fiber art at the Visual Arts Center, sharing his passion through classes and workshops. He is a part of Shockoe Bottom Clay where he has his studio and also teaches private lessons. He has participated in local art exhibitions, the RVA clay tour, and his work can be found at the VMFA shop. Mr. Singleton specializes in utilitarian ceramics with an emphasis on surface design, his educational background and experiences allow him to offer a unique and enriching perspective on the art of ceramics.
