In the spirit of fulfilling the mission of the CA4, the following is a call to action for CA4 members to support an endowment to name a classroom in the new School of Engineering building in honor of the Citadel’s first African American engineering graduate - Arnold Benson ’73. As agreed by the CA4 Executive Committee, the goal is to raise $100,000 and endow the fund through donations from CA4 members and our supporters.
Aronld Benson Class of 1973, an electrical engineering major, is the Citadel's first African American engineering graduate. He matriculated into the Corps of Cadets in 1969 amidst unprecedented turmoil in our Nation’s history. Only a year after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr and Robert F. Kennedy were assassinated, this Burke High School graduate found his way to the Citadel. While there, he not only survived but thrived in a demanding and academically rigorous environment. After graduating, he worked for South Carolina Electric and Gas where he had a distinguish 38-year career and retired in 2012.
CA4 has an opportunity to give Mr. Benson his flowers while he’s with us. With your support, we can commission the “Arnold Benson ’73 Clean Energy Classroom” recognizing his accomplishments and naming the second CA4 sponsored facility on the Citadel campus.
