About Dollars for Dance!

In 2017, Sumi and Taryn, co-founders of Summation Dance in New York City, embarked on a cross-country exploration by way of Camper Van as part of a multi-phased project aimed at researching how geography shapes ideology, in conjunction with the social theories of habitus and performativity. Geographical location can intrinsically shape the perspective of its people—from the way they experience life to how they choose to participate in the world. How does this permeate our lives, informing the most profound parts of who we become?

Multiple stops have included engagements with University dance departments. Participating institutions thus far include: Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, University of Kentucky, Elon University, and Hunter College.

Summation Dance would like to partner with Texas A&M International University to expand on their research and engage our students in this exciting adventure. They will visit Laredo, Texas for seven days, working with our students, teaching master classes, and interviewing members of the Laredo community to investigate the idea of Habitus - a sociological system aimed at understanding why individuals perceive the world as they do, and how this, in turn, informs their behaviors and participation within society.

The work they create on our students will premiere at the Spring Dance Concert, April 13th and 14th, 2018 at the TAMIU Center for Fine and Performing Arts.  In addition, our students have the opportunity to be invited to premiere the larger work with the company in New York City in 2019! Please help us bring Sumi and Taryn to TAMIU to give our students the experience of a lifetime!
