For nearly four decades, Clifton Titus, Jr. influenced the lives of hundreds of Saints through his academic love of math, enthusiasm on the court and field, and as a visionary administrator and Headmaster during times of significant change.
First and foremost, Clif identified as a teacher, and was honored with the Faculty Excellence Award from the SSS Alumni Association in 1987 who remarked, “the embodiment of an educator in the truest sense of the word is summed up in a name - Clifton Titus.” His passion for the teaching profession is a lasting hallmark at our school as is his unwavering commitment to ensure all students succeed.
Our goal is simple: to name a community or academic space at the reimagined Upper School in Clif's name and honor his legacy at SSSAS as a beloved faculty member who inspired decades of Saints.
The Titus family roots at SSSAS were planted in 1960 when Mary Lou Titus (Eaton) began her career at St. Agnes School as a religion teacher and academic counselor following completion of a master’s degree from Virginia Theological Seminary. In 1961 Clif joined the St. Stephen’s School faculty with a master’s degree from the University of Virginia and began his tenure of teaching excellence. In August 1971 Clif and Mary Lou exchanged their wedding vows after a courtship that began with a fortuitous introduction by Mrs. Peg Babyak, SSSAS faculty and staff 1951-2004. Together, Clif and Mary Lou were humble servant leaders of our school through their academic leadership, warm hospitality, and commitment to student success. Clif and Mary Lou’s three children, Olivia ‘90, Clarke ‘96, and Katherine, were also deeply connected to the school and active in several of the extracurricular activities from basketball, field hockey, lacrosse, science club and more. The Titus family and Clif’s dedication to enriching the lives of every Saint serve as a lasting example for our community today.
