Ship Athletics Inclusion Leaders Scholarship (S.A.I.L.S.)

My name is Kurt Dunkel, and I am a two time graduate of Shippensburg University (BS '98, MS '04) and member of the SU Athletics Hall of Fame ('12). I have worked full-time at Shippensburg University for the majority of my professional career. I have also been a part-time assistant coach of Track and Field at Ship since I graduated in 1998. So, my Shippensburg University roots run deep and I am a very proud alum.

My experience as a student-athlete taught me more than I knew at the time; particularly about what it means to be part of a diverse team and become friends with teammates that didn't look like me or come from similar backgrounds. They were truly experiences that were both irreplaceable and invaluable to me. Historically, at Ship, I have noticed that many of our athletics teams are not yet as representative of the diversity we see on Ship's campus and in American society. I began to consider tangible ways to provide opportunities, promote inclusion, and remove barriers.

The S.A.I.L.S. Scholarship will:

  • Provide opportunities and support for student-athletes of underrepresented populations who would like to participate on a variety of teams at Shippensburg University; specifically our teams which have historically lacked diversity including: Swimming (Women’s & Men’s), Tennis (Women’s), Lacrosse (Women’s), Field Hockey (Women’s), Baseball (Men’s), Softball (Women’s), Cross Country (Men’s & Women’s), Soccer (Women’s).
  • It will help support coaches who would like to promote inclusion by recruiting talented and capable student-athletes from a wide variety of diverse backgrounds.
  • It will help to remove barriers by providing financial assistance, which can make Ship a more attractive opportunity for a larger number of potential student-athletes with varying backgrounds and financial needs. It will also reduce the need for scholarship recipients to juggle the tasks of athletic participation while working other jobs to help make ends meet. Ultimately, my hope is that the S.A.I.L.S. scholarship will allow more students the opportunity to compete in Shippensburg University athletics and have some of the rewarding, enriching, and life-changing experiences I had as a student-athlete at Ship.
