Honoring Our Mother Mary Jane Taylor

We are endeavoring to honor our late mother, Mary Jane Taylor, by naming the library at the Grace B. Luhrs University Elementary School at Shippensburg University.  Our intent is to raise $100,000 in charitable contributions to name the library the Mary Jane Taylor Library.  This naming opportunity requires charitable gifts totaling $100,000 to the Shippensburg University Foundation within three years.  We have requested that the SU Foundation earmark the donated funds to be used exclusively for the library such as purchasing library/media materials.  Our family and close friends have pledged to match dollar for dollar the first $25,000 propelling us toward our goal.

We feel it is most appropriate to honor our mother by recognizing two of her greatest passions:  her love of lab schools and her love of early childhood development and literacy.  Mary Jane began teaching nursery and kindergarten at Rowland Lab School for Young Children on Shippensburg University’s campus in the late 1960’s.  In 1986, she began her tenure as the school’s director and held that position until her retirement in 1996.  In this role, she worked tirelessly to ensure that children received cutting edge curriculum along with the benefits derived from her close collaboration with the SU Teacher Education Department.  She became intimately involved with what was then the National Association of Lab Schools, later to be renamed the International Association of Lab Schools where she served as recording secretary.  Mary Jane traveled North America visiting other lab schools and then returning to SU full of new ideas to share and implement.  In retirement, she continued her involvement with the lab school by consistent and expert volunteerism.

Mary Jane's teaching philosophy and the warmth of her personality positively influenced the lives of teachers, staff, students and their families.  If we measure the success of a life by how many people one positively impacts, we must view Mary Jane’s life as a grand success.  Please join Mary Jane’s family and friends in this undertaking by contributing to naming the Luhrs library.  It seems fitting that someone who spent so much of her life’s energy educating children be forever remembered at the lab school.

Please consider making a gift toward this initiative in memory of Mary Jane knowing that your support will impact future generations of children.
