SYA Founder's Week 2020

This campaign ended on September 16, 2020, but you can still make a gift to School Year Abroad by clicking here!

We hear, time and time again, the stories of School Year Abroad providing students opportunities to grow -- in creativity, in confidence, in curiosity. Our alumni community consistently shares that SYA laid the foundation for their growth.

The SYA Fund - through your support - plays a crucial role in making sure those opportunities continue to be available to our students.

Did you know that the average lifetime value of a recurring gift is two and a half times greater than that of a one-time gift? What makes that even more special? The most common recurring gift amount is just $20. So much of SYA is sustained by our community -- and we want you to be a part of it.

I want to support the SYA experience! What should I do?

Click the "Give Now" button and choose an amount that's right for you! For a greater impact, consider a monthly gift. From there, enter the payment source you'd like to use, and you're all set!

I have already given to SYA, how else can I help today?

Consider making your gift a recurring one, or if you already give monthly, increase your gift by just $5! Most of all, be sure to share with friends and family why you support SYA, and why they should too.

Everyone can share! Becoming an advocate and sharing this campaign also has a direct impact on growing the community that supports SYA.

  • Create a Personal Plea - tell us why you care about SYA!
  • Share with anyone and everyone you know cares about SYA!

Make sure to sign in and share your personal link, so you can see the new recurring gifts that come in because of your help.

In 1964 . . .

On September 9, 1964, two teachers and the original 11 "schoolboys" set sail from Hoboken, New Jersey to Le Havre, France aboard the MS Aurelia. Their eastbound fare was $196. At $3,200, tuition covered this travel expense and most others for the year. The original school was located at the Instituto de Estudios Norteamericanos in Barcelona.

Schoolboys Abroad was conceived by Clark Vaughan, a Spanish teacher at Wilbraham Academy, and SYA's first Resident Director. Vaughan took the idea to Phillips Academy Andover where Headmaster John Kemper backed the program and gave it space for an administrative office. Dan Olivier, head of the French Department at Germantown Friends School, was Vaughan's assistant in setting up the program and taught English for SYA, and Col. Edward M. Harris, a Phillips Academy Spanish teacher, was the first executive director for Schoolboys Abroad.

American-based faculty members Olivier and Ted Hammond (math teacher from Phillips Academy) and their wives accompanied the first group of boys aboard the ship. Olivier was also instrumental in identifying the location for SYA France, which opened in Rennes in the fall of 1967.

50 Years of Coeducation

This year we are honoring the influence and contributions of women to SYA's past, present and future. Follow along as we dig through the archives and share alumnae profiles and stories. Missed our discussion with alumnae from the first classes? Watch it here.

"The World Needs More Listeners"

From SYA Spain in 1999 to her current associate professorship in French at the University of Washington, Maya Angela Smith ES'99 has pursued her love of languages around the globe.

Maya is one of many students for whom financial aid made SYA possible. The Campaign for SYA is working to expand student aid, giving more young people access to the adventure of a lifetime. Read more about Maya on Story Central.

Happy Founder's Day!

We launch each year on September 9th, but a single day just isn't enough to celebrate this year. We're marking not only SYA's 56th birthday, but the 50-year-anniversary of our transition from Schoolboys Abroad (as it was originally known) to School Year Abroad as we welcomed women to our Barcelona campus for the first time. Learn more about 50 years of coeducation at SYA.

As a special tribute throughout the year, we'll be highlighting the many women of SYA. Are you a woman of SYA? Please share your story! We look forward to sharing your experiences and how SYA helped shape your life and/or career.
