In his years of ministry, Fr. Ray was known and respected for his gentle and personable humility, steady wisdom, and unwavering devotion to preaching and living the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
After serving two years in the Marines, Fr. Ray held many roles for the Edmundites: priest, preacher, pastor, chaplain, retreat master, leader, director, administrator, counselor, editor, writer, and more. He served on the Collegeโs Board of Trustees as well as the Board of Fire and Rescue. He was an avid athlete as well as a dedicated Purple Knight sports fan.
Fr. Ray's passing was felt deeply and profoundly on campus and in the wider Saint Michaelโs community. Now, we are celebrating and honoring his life, his achievements, and his enduring spirit. Fr. Ray embodied the values of the Edmundites and Saint Michaelโs College. He led by example, inspiring generations to lead, serve, and live a life of purpose.
We have identified areas of support that were near and dear to Fr. Rayโs heart and will continue his lifeโs work here on campus — educating, ministering to, and guiding students. Please join us by making a gift today.
Dear Saint Michaelโs alumni, families, and friends,
Over the past two days, so many in our community have come together to support Saint Michaelโs College in memory of Fr. Ray Doherty, S.S.E. โ51.
Fr. Ray was a mentor and guide to me, someone I could always approach for advice on a wide range of topics such as homily preparation, spiritual reading, or simply talk baseball. He was compassionate, kind, and an enthusiastic supporter of generations of students, faculty, staff, and alumni. He was a true Michaelman and a model religious priest who represented the values of the Edmundites and our College community.
We, the Society of Saint Edmund, have been truly touched by the generosity of our alumni, families, and friends for helping us to honor and remember Fr. Ray in this special way. Therefore, we have decided to give $100,000 as a matching gift initiative to extend this fundraising effort through December 31, 2021, in the hopes that you will join us in making a gift to support our students and programs.
You can make a gift today at: www.smcvt.edu/inmemory or by mailing a check to Saint Michaelโs College, Box 256, One Winooski Park, Colchester, VT 05439.
On behalf of myself, my brothers in the Society of Saint Edmund, and our College, thank you!
Happy belated Saint Edmundโs Day! Rev. Brian J. Cummings, S.S.E. โ86 Director of Edmundite Campus Ministry
