Crane Latin Ensemble's Travel to Puerto Rico

The Crane Latin Ensemble is traveling to Puerto Rico March 7-14 during the students' spring break for a cultural exchange and disaster relief project incorporating applied and service learning. During the Ensemble's stay in San Juan, they will study traditional Puerto Rican music through workshops and coached rehearsals with faculty at the Conservatorio de Musica de Puerto Rico, culminating in a collaborative performance on March 10th. This interactive engagement with cultural insiders will be transformative to the students’ understanding of this important musical art form.

Following their study in San Juan, they will transition to Martorell/Yabucoa to engage in hurricane relief and recovery work. The Yabucoa region was among the hardest hit during Hurricane Maria, and, consequently, relief and recovery efforts are ongoing there. The recovery work will include roof repair and removal of toxic mold from private homes, and restoration of community resources such as baseball fields and community athletic centers.

With the combined experiences of musical study, collaborative music making, and volunteerism, the trip to Puerto Rico embodies the true spirit of cultural exchange. Students in the Crane Latin Ensemble have already raised 50% of the cost of the trip individually and another 30% has been raised from other sources; they are now looking to raise the remaining 20% ($5000). In recognition of their role as cultural and school ambassadors for Crane, we ask for your support in bridging the financial gap for the trip. Your generosity will in turn be matched by our students' compassionate work rebuilding communities and changing lives.
