Founded in 2009, the Apollo Outreach Initiative (AOI) is a year-round media literacy outreach program that provides sustainable educational outreach and media literacy opportunities for public school students of all ages in northeast Ohio. Over the last eight years, we have formed a bridge between Oberlin College and local communities that many families have come to rely on, and each year we build new partnerships.

During this time we have offered eighteen college courses, for example, along with eight summer media workshops for teens, and countless media literacy projects and residencies, which take Oberlin College students outside the classroom for an average of fifty hours per semester to work with children in the community. We help over 400 kids every year tell their stories and grow as artists, citizens, and leaders by mentoring them in the use of media, especially film, as a force for local and global education, understanding, community building, and change.

Despite the success of this work, our future remains uncertain.

Since we believe in providing our workshops and residencies to the community free of charge, our financial wellbeing is difficult to maintain. From the beginning, Apollo Outreach has been funded entirely through the gifts of generous individuals and organizations. And right now, even though we’re growing and reaching more kids in more places than ever before, we’re in a tough spot financially and are uncertain about our future.

If you'd like to see Apollo Outreach continue, please donate today!
