NSU Medical Trip to Dominican Republic

This campaign ended on August 16, 2019, but you can still make a gift to Nova Southeastern University by clicking here!

The Physician Assistant students of Nova Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale campus, have been given the opportunity to share medical experience and skills to deliver healthcare to the under-served population of Dominican Republic.

Outside the major cities and tourist areas, there is a scarcity of public health care. Health care facilities, personnel and medicines are often lacking in government clinics. Thus, many patients delay in seeking medical care due to a lack of medical resources and facilities. Because emergency services are also very limited, it is often difficult to treat the patient until it is too late.

We are very excited because we will be bringing healthcare to them! These refugee areas have about 300 families that have been displaced by natural disaster and flooding in San Cristobal. With your support, we will be able to provide personalized care in wellness clinics in different neighborhoods. We will do blood pressure checks, heart rate, blood sugar physical examinations, as well as screen for possible infections.

We will also volunteer in a local hospital where we can care for trauma patients. Many of our students have extensive medical background, some with training in IV infusions. Our team members will rotate through different roles in Labor and Delivery, NICU, Trauma, Pre-op, Surgery, Pediatrics, and ER. For example, team members will be on the obstetric floor aiding with delivery of babies and passing out supplies such as newborn baby items. We will have the opportunity to teach patients on subjects regarding their conditions. This medical mission trip is very important because although poverty has a huge effect on our patients’ lives, we want to impart education on wellness and preventative health care. We can show the people that there are ways to stay healthy and avoid complications of diseases. Our team is looking forward to sharing in the experience of a positive change in the lives of the people in the community.
