This year, the Alvin Sherman Library is celebrating National Library Week by developing a community impact initiative. Our goal is to introduce the Nova Southeastern University Alvin Sherman Library to people in our community who may be unfamiliar with it. In addition, we wanted to work with a local partner that already does great things in Broward County.
The Boys and Girls Club of Broward County is an obvious choice. NSU and the Boys and Girls Club are currently collaborating on a number of projects. The Rick and Rita Case Club is an outreach center for the Alvin Sherman Library.
The Alvin Sherman Library provide thousands of books to this club and our 12 other community centers every year to encourage a love of reading. This year, we will welcome some children to campus to encourage a love of libraries.
With Chris Gentile and his staff from the Boys and Girls Club, we planned a summer visit to the Alvin Sherman Library. Nearly 100 children from three clubs will be transported to NSU's Fort Lauderdale/Davie campus. They will meet several of our children's librarians during their visit to the Alvin Sherman Library. Franklin Renwick, an NSU alumnus, will give a special book talk after the tour. In his Fly'mingoo Banking, Franklin stresses the importance of financial literacy.
Besides celebrating our libraries, April is also National Financial Literacy Month. Children form their money habits as early as seven, according to a University of Cambridge study. These researchers suggest that we begin discussing money with our children by age three.
Our goal is to extend the lessons of Fly'mingoo Banking and financial literacy well beyond that day. The Alvin Sherman Library will provide members with a copy of the book and a library card.
Franklin Renwick, the Boys and Girls Club staff, and the Alvin Sherman Librarians will have lunch with the Boys and Girls Club members before they return to their clubs.
These children will experience a fun-filled, possibly life-changing day. Let's make this day possible together with the Boys and Girls Club of Broward County and Nova Southeastern University.
