NYU Steel Bridge

NYU Steel Bridge is a student-led Vertically Integrated Project whose objective is to design, fabricate, and construct a 20ft long steel bridge that must support 2,500 lbs with minimal deflection as well as a lateral load of 50 lbs. This bridge will be entered into the Regional Student Steel Bridge Competition (SSBC) hosted by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) where it will compete against a number of other schools in the Metropolitan region for the opportunity to compete at the national level. The design process of the bridge incorporates classroom knowledge and engineering principles to produce rough sketches, which then undergo structural analysis using SAP2000. Once a design is chosen it is modeled on the online modeling software, OnShape, where shop drawings are eventually produced from. During the fabrication process, the team works in the lab with more hands-on skills (cutting, grinding, welding) to produce each member of the bridge accurately. Lastly, the construction process involves multiple practice sessions to coordinate the optimal construction plan that will be competitive with other schools at competition.

In previous National competitions, the team placed 19th overall in the 2018 National Finals, and placed 6th overall in the 2021 National Finals, and 29th place in 2024.

The Steel Bridge team is hoping to receive your support in being able to achieve our goal of once again competing in the National competition. We ask for your assistance in being able to purchase vital items for the fabrication of the bridge and funding our travel arrangements to the regional competition at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (Newark, NJ) and hopefully the national competition at Iowa State.
