School districts across the state of Missouri are struggling to find qualified secondary mathematics teachers.
To address this need, we are starting the Young Mathematics Teacher Academy.
We are recruiting 20-25 incoming junior and senior high school students to participate in a week-long residential academy (June 20-24). Students will engage in mini-courses geared towards advancing their understanding of important mathematics topics and best practices in teaching mathematics. Students will be paired with a teaching mentor from their high school and, during the school year, while still high school, have an opportunity to present a lesson, or two, to their peers and complete a tutoring apprenticeship. A MSU faculty advisor will be assigned to the student, with the goal of fast-tracking back into the classroom.
The funds raised through this campaign will support students attending the Young Mathematics Teacher Academy, providing them with practical real-world teaching experience.
