What is the National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC)? National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is a collaborative organization of nine historically African American, international Greek letter fraternities and sororities, known as the Divine Nine. NPHC was formed in 1930 to promote interaction, engagement and cooperative programming. The stated purpose of NPHC is “Unanimity of thought and action as far as possible in the conduct of Greek letter collegiate fraternities and sororities, and to consider problems of mutual interest to its member organizations.”
What are NPHC PLOTS? NPHC Plots can be traced back to the days of slavery. In months following the end of the Civil War, confiscated confederate land was
divided into 40-acre plots for homestead development.
Today, Plots are constructed on college campuses to represent each of the NPHC organizations and to give alumni and students the opportunity for reflection, gathering and celebration. Since the MSU NPHC chapters do not have houses to gather within, these Plots will create a physical and symbolic presence on the campus.
Why are the NPHC Plots important to Missouri State? According to Brittany Buchannon, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, "The plots represent a visual legacy that myself, my sorority sisters, and my organization can leave behind long after we are gone that will represent what we did and who we are as an organization.”
The NPHC Plots will be constructed on the east side of McDonald Arena. The structure will evolve into a beautiful outdoor patio where each of the nine NPHC organizations will be recognized with a plaque displaying their crest and important chapter information. Two large stone pergolas will be installed creating shade and an inviting space for students to congregate.
Walter Mingole, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, says, “These plots represent a standard for NPHC being at Missouri State University. It represents the success that we’ve had over the years we’ve been on campus and is a great step forward as a monument for our achievements.”
