Help Send DPT students to Uganda

This campaign ends on November 20 at 12:08PM EST

We are Second Year Doctor of Physical Therapy Students at Missouri State University hoping to travel from Springfield, Missouri to Entebbe Uganda in March of 2020.

We’ll spend 12 days serving children at no cost to their families by working at Sure Prospect school, an inclusive educational institution, and Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services in Uganda (CoRSU), a children’s surgical rehabilitation hospital.

In Uganda, the government pays for the cost of schooling up through fifth grade, but they don’t cover any additional costs for children with special needs or disabilities.

During our time at the school, we’ll be focusing on two things. First, we will spend time educating the teachers on how best to create an environment in which children with disabilities can learn and develop.  Second, we will be purchasing adaptive equipment like wheelchairs and wheelchair accessories and paying for modifications to adapt equipment so that the children can best learn and develop in their environment.

We will spend 50% of our time at CoRSU treating patients of various ages and giving continuing education seminars to the therapists and doctors at the hospital. In addition to the seminars, we will be leaving behind books, videos, and research resources for the therapists.

Through our interaction with Ugandan therapists and physicians, we will learn from each other and sharpen our skills in a very different setting than here in the midwest.

Our goal is not only to leave wheelchairs and adaptive equipment to help a small number of people but knowledge that can help thousands of patients over years. This is one of the most exciting parts of the trip; our twelve day trip will impact patients and their families in Uganda. The MSU PT program has worked with the hospital and school in the past, and we are very excited to continue this partnership. The last time our program was able to contribute is shown in the video on this page.
