Doug Thompson Fund for Class Trips

This campaign ended on July 01, 2017, but you can still make a gift to Mid-Peninsula High School by clicking here!

When you were a student at Mid-Pen, did you explore the vibrant art scene in New York City, snorkel among the fishes off Catalina Island, walk the streets of Dublin as Irish history came to life, or travel to Latin America to practice your Spanish? If so, you know that the class trips that Mid-Pen offers truly bring classroom learning to life. They represent an important part of the Mid-Pen student experience, but for some students, they are something more: life changing. For some, these trips may be their first trip out of the country, the first time on a plane, or even their first time away from home.

Established by the Board of Trustees as a way to honor Doug Thompson upon his retirement in June as Head of School, the Douglas C. Thompson Fund will provide financial assistance to students who cannot otherwise afford to participate in the school’s travel program. Started many years ago with a single science trip, the travel program at Mid-Pen has expanded significantly under Doug’s leadership to include four distinctly different trips that are outside the school’s usual curriculum. Approximately 50 students each year participate in these week-long trips.

But trips are expensive, and the school cannot currently accommodate all the requests for financial assistance from students who would like to participate.

During his tenure as head, Doug has been a passionate advocate for diversity, financial aid, and the kind of experiential learning Mid-Pen's class trips represent. Acting as a special school savings account, the Thompson Fund will allow more students than ever before to participate on class trips, regardless of financial need. The goal is to raise $250,000, which will provide financial assistance for students for many years to come; the school has already raised almost $160,000.

A generous donation honoring Doug on his retirement will allow the school to say “yes” to those students who need financial assistance to participate class trips. By helping to ensure that Mid-Pen is able to continue to provide its students exciting for experiential learning beyond the classroom, your gift will directly touch the lives of a new generation of Mid-Pen students.
