The Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative (COSI) supports students at MSU Denver with scholarships and wraparound services to provide students with the tools they need to continue their education. The difference COSI makes can be seen firsthand with students who receive the scholarship and graduate on time with less student debt. It is important to hear from MSU Denver’s scholars on how COSI has impacted their lives and how funds are often used from the student perspective.
Nicole Horton states "The Boundless Opportunity and COSI matching scholarship couldn't have entered my life at a more perfect time. Struggling to balance a full-time job and provide for my four kids, I hit a wall when my federal financial aid ran out. Feeling the weight of giving up on my education, these scholarships appeared like a gift from the universe, (or in this case, Scott Bergman who emailed me). They weren't just financial assistance; they were a lifeline that kept my academic dreams alive. Grateful doesn't begin to cover it—I'm indebted to these scholarships for turning my graduation dream into a reality. They were the helping hand I needed when things seemed impossible, and now, as a graduate, I can't help but look back with immense appreciation for the support that came just when I needed it the most. Thank you!”
Cody McKeithan says “I started college when I was 17. I was homeless at the time and have experienced financial, mental health, and housing instability all my life. I will turn 59 in the Fall and am still trying my best to finish my bachelor's degree. I have failed countless times but do not want to give up. When I resumed my studies at MSU, it only occurred to me that perhaps financial aid would cover my education expenses. I am a single parent with neurodivergence. I work part time while attending school. Thanks to this scholarship, I have money set aside for emergencies like my recent rent increase that occurred simultaneously as my hours at work were decreased! I am able to continue my studies with no interruption and hope to graduate in December.”
Paola Cortes adds "The COSI Scholarship has impacted my life in the best way possible! It has made my college journey one of hope and opportunity. It gave me hope to continue my education without having to worry about the financial aspect of it, and it gave me the opportunity to interact with different people and resources."
