Colonel Robert K. Mock was a legend at Metropolitan State University of Denver for his courage and daring as a fighter pilot; his love of aviation, which led him to teach and serve as department chair and dean; and his dedication to Metro State and his students.

Colonel Mock came to Metro State in 1987 as chair of the Aviation and Aerospace Science department and was named dean of the School of Professional Studies in 1996. After serving in this position for five years, he returned to teaching in the aviation department as one of the most admired and loved faculty. In 2005, Metro State honored Professor Mock with the Distinguished Service Award for Faculty. He was given the Metro State Outstanding Advising Award posthumously for the year 2007-2008. Colonel Mock’s history at the Metro State spans twenty-one years.

Perhaps Professor Mock’s greatest legacy at Metro State is the World Indoor Airport (WIA) recognized as one of the most technologically advanced collegiate integrated flight and air traffic control simulator laboratories in the country. He established the WIA and procured grants totaling $1.3 million to make it a reality. He also designed and supervised the WIA’s move to its current location in the Seventh Street facility. The WIA has helped the department grow to become one of the top five aviation and aerospace programs in the country. An expert in space, aerodynamics, management, meteorology, military careers, and propulsion.

Professor Mock brought international recognition to Metro State when he was elected Executive Director of the University Aviation Association in 1991.

Colonel Mock served for twenty-nine years in the Air Force, fought in the Vietnam War and Korean Conflict, and became a decorated squadron commander in Vietnam while serving three tours of duty. His many accomplishments include the successful negotiation of a United States – Philippines defense treaty. For this he was awarded The Philippine Legion of Honor. It is the Order of Defense Merit of the Philippines. Its highest rank, that of Chief Commander, is the highest honor that the President of the Philippines may grant an individual. This was awarded to Bob.
