This past summer the LMU Music family lost a member of our community, Reggie Morton. Reggie was a History major who wanted to return to playing the trombone, and his first playing experience was with the Splitter Sound Machine, the university pep ensemble. Reggie was a quiet student, but spirited and energetic about music and live performance. He so enjoyed performing with the group that he also joined our other main instrumental ensembles on campus. He was a special student, and one I miss every day.
We hope to honor and memorialize Reggie with a scholarship for students to take part in the Splitter Sound Machine, and for this scholarship to represent what the ensemble means to many students. We are a place for members of our community to do something they love, with like minded people, in a setting of inclusion, caring, and fun for all. The Splitter Sound Machine's mission is to bring joy and entertainment to anyone within earshot, and I believe these were characteristics that Reggie also shared as a person. We will miss his warmth, his unmistakable laugh, and his dedication to the group, and I hope with this funding we can keep his spirit alive.
For this fundraising effort, we will be accepting gifts of any size you wish to give. We will be offering a Splitter Sound Machine T-shirt for every donation above $25, which will feature our logo, the lyrics to the Lincoln Victory Song, and a special patch with Reggie's initials. My hope is that we can see everyone who was touched by Reggie in one of our shirts, perhaps that will be an even greater memorial for him than the scholarship.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Cook
Music Faculty & Director of the Splitter Sound Machine
