About

Lake Forest College football player Donald Justin “D.J.” Baker passed away unexpectedly on June 1, 2016. His wit, charisma, vitality, and most of all his loving heart left a unique impression on all who knew him. Baker, a native of Decatur, Illinois, had just completed his second year at the College and was a defensive lineman on the Forester football team. The communication major had turned 20 just a few weeks earlier.

After appearing in just one game as a freshman, Baker saw action in all 10 of the team’s contests and made six starts at nose tackle in 2015. He recorded at least one tackle in six of those games with a high of seven against Beloit College on September 26. His 17 stops on the season ranked third among the squad’s defensive linemen.

“D.J. was just an awesome kid,” began Lake Forest College Head Football Coach Jim Catanzaro. “He had an an extremely positive and infectious personality and marched to the beat of his own drum. He had become one of the leaders on our team and was enthusiastically involved in many of our community service projects, especially those including children. D.J. is certainly going to be missed by our entire team, both on and off the field, and our condolences go out to his family and many friends.”

To honor Baker, one of the team’s annual awards has been renamed in his honor. The D.J. Baker Forester Pride Award is voted on by the players and presented to the member of the team that best embodies the Lake Forest College football program. This individual should lead the team in energy and emotion; put the needs of the team, his teammates, and the program ahead of his own; and demonstrate and inspire servanthood among his teammates, while endearing himself to the Football program. This individual must carry the torch of the program into the campus community with pride and serve as an example of all that is great about being a Forester football player. There is no greater honor in the program. In addition, the team’s Defensive Player of the Week proudly wears uniform number 93 in the next contest.

D.J. Baker Forester Pride Award Winners: Ted Crane (2019), Chase Creviston/Charlie Timmerman (2018), Tom Steen (2017), Brendan Power (2016)
