A wonderful project is now underway on the Lake Forest College campus. The dramatic renovation and expansion of historic Young Hall – which many of you knew as College Hall – began last month and will be completed by the end of next summer, in time for the 2021 fall semester. Thanks to a remarkably generous lead gift from College Trustee William G. Brown and his wife Solange, the building is being renamed Brown Hall.

The $20 million facility will include a substantial new rear addition, as you can see in the rendering above, and will double the size of the original Young Hall. Standing in the center of campus, the facility will feature contemporary new classrooms and student spaces designed for twenty-first century teaching and learning, and will continue to house our social science departments as well as math, computer science, and data science. In addition, Brown Hall will be the new home of our nationally recognized Career Advancement Center.

As this vital project clearly illustrates, the College continues to advance steadily forward, despite the pandemic. The Brown Hall grand opening and reception are scheduled for next fall’s Homecoming Weekend on Friday, October 1, 2021. Please plan to return to campus: you won’t want to miss this!

Thanks to the strong support of many alumni, parents, and friends, only $2.5 million remains to be raised to fully fund this vital project. If you have the ability to do so, I invite you to join them in making a special gift today.

As you consider this request, I hope you will keep in mind these important points:

  • Brown Hall will be a magnetic new campus attraction for prospective students and their parents. They will be thrilled by the beauty and great capacity of the new facility, and they will also be inspired by the way it directly connects key academic departments to the career planning priorities of the Career Advancement Center. In this time period of strong enrollment competition across the country, Brown Hall will be a major new asset for Lake Forest College.
  • Currently remotely located on South Campus, our highly regarded Career Advancement Center (CAC) was recently featured in a Chronicle of Higher Education article along with career centers at Stanford and Rutgers. The relocation to Brown Hall will enable CAC professional staff to work hand-in-hand with teaching faculty to ensure that our students have great career options when they graduate. CAC’s new home will include staff offices, an employer greeting area, employer meeting rooms, and student interview rooms.

We are immensely grateful for your consideration, and I send my sincerest thanks and best wishes.

Sincerely,

Stephen D. Schutt, President
