The COVID-19 Better Together Fund

Jefferson is grateful to announce a $100,000 gift from Strongline to the COVID-19 Better Together Fund.

The partnership between Strongline and Jefferson has come to life through the contribution of Strongline’s technology and commercial expertise coupled with Jefferson’s vision, iterative feedback, and ongoing guidance. Strongline and Jefferson share a common mission to improve lives, do the right thing, and be bold. Through Strongline’s unique Bluetooth- and WiFi-enabled location infrastructure, TJUH healthcare workers have the ability to trigger a wearable duress alarm, discreetly summoning immediate help if they find themselves in a volatile situation. This technology ensures the safety of our front-line heroes, providing them peace of mind in the workplace.

In a memo from Strongline and their parent company, Collateral Opportunities, leaders Phil and Justin Green shared, “We are committed to supporting Jefferson staff in whatever ways we can, and we hope this donation will help mitigate the impact of the pandemic on some of the same staff we are protecting throughout the hospital.” 

A life-changing medical experience can stick with someone for many years; doctors, nurses, and even hospitals often hold a special place in the hearts of these grateful patients. Chuck and Marian Grimley, of Cherry Hill – whose relationship with Jefferson spans several decades - would call this an understatement. 

The couple, on behalf of their family and their business, Grimley Financial Corporation (GFC), recently donated $3,500 to the Jefferson Enterprise COVID-19 Better Together Fund in support of employees and students facing hardships related to the pandemic. They also delivered a tasty meal from Chick’s Deli to more than 60 Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital employees. 

Accompanied by vibrant roses and a large banner saying, “Our True Heroes,” the meals were meant to express the couple’s heartfelt appreciation. “Every day during this pandemic, healthcare workers knowingly place their own lives at risk to save others and keep families together. They answer the call fearlessly and care for patients relentlessly,” said Chuck, founder of GFC. 

Chuck and Marian know about Jefferson’s commitment to excellence from their own experience with the healthcare organization, which stretches back nearly 30 years, when the couple’s twin daughters, Lauren and Kristen, were born at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) in Philadelphia in in 1982. It was an easy birth experience, but just a few years later, in 1995, the Grimleys found themselves back at TJUH, struggling with a high-risk pregnancy. 

Again, pregnant with twins, Marian was around 18 weeks pregnant when she started experiencing complications; her OB/GYN team discovered that their unborn babies’ growth was compromised – but there was still hope. She was admitted to TJUH for testing and would remain there for nearly three months. 

During this challenging time, the hospital became like a second home, with a much-needed, expert support system. Chuck and Marian got to know staff on every level – from clinicians to support team members. Simple conversations became as meaningful as a hug or pat on the back. One of their most memorable nights was Thanksgiving, when they were able to sit down to a peaceful dinner in the quiet TJUH atrium.

The couple also recall the professionalism and dedication of the Jefferson medical team managing their care – experts across the Philadelphia region, from various partnering hospitals, were brought in to help. Support was provided around the clock. 

Marian was finally discharged but returned only a week later, in labor. The Grimley’s second set of twins, Chad and Tyler, were born 12 weeks early. Both babies were tiny and frail. Tyler, sadly, died shortly after birth. 

While Marian was being cared for, Chuck often visited the hospital’s chapel. Spending many hours in prayer, he not only found solace in his faith, but in the stories of other families also facing medical crises: “The common thread in all the stories was the incredible and nurturing Jefferson staff,” he said. 

“My doctors and neonatologists -- on a scale of one to 10 -- were a 12,” Marian recalls. “They were incredibly understanding, skilled, and their bedside manner was extraordinary. We wouldn’t have gotten through this without them.” 

Chad, now 24, is as healthy and successful as Chuck and Marian could have ever wished for. According to Chuck, he lives his life knowing that Tyler is always watching over him. The Grimleys have received medical care from Jefferson many times since the birth of their children, including in recent years for Chuck’s treatment of a rare neurological condition.

Aside from the family’s health history, yet another unique tie the Grimleys have to Jefferson is that Chuck’s grandfather, John Lafferty, once owned the land adjacent to where Jefferson Cherry Hill Hospital sits. Chuck has many fond memories of playing outdoors there and is proud to see how the hospital has grown and continues to flourish. 

“What Marian and I will never forget, in addition to the lifesaving skills of all the staff, is the tremendous comfort, warmth and care provided by Jefferson during an extremely difficult time,” said Chuck. “Jefferson is, and always will be, very near and dear to us.”

Jefferson is grateful to announce a $50,000 gift from the Connelly Foundation to the COVID-19 Better Together Fund.

The Connelly Foundation aims to foster learning and improve the quality of life in the Greater Philadelphia area. Over the past 63 years, the foundation has donated more than $440 million to nonprofit organizations in the Philadelphia area, focusing on education, human services, and the arts—including more than $10.5 million to Jefferson benefiting key programs and projects. 

Former President of the Connelly Foundation, Josephine Mandeville, was one of Jefferson’s longest-serving trustees since joining the Thomas Jefferson University (TJU) Board in 1979. Mrs. Mandeville served under five presidents and 10 board chairs. Her brother, Thomas Connelly, served on Jefferson’s President’s Leadership Council from 2014 – 2019, advising the strategic planning and implementation of Dr. Klasko’s vision for the future of healthcare and education. 

The Connelly Foundation’s generosity has touched every facet of our institution, such as patient care initiatives in the Jefferson Breast Care Center and the Myrna Brind Center for Integrative Medicine; research, through a major grant for construction of the Bluemle Life Sciences Building; and education, through support of the Dorrance H. Hamilton Building, the heart of our Center City campus. The foundation has also made crucial investments in nursing training and neuroscience research, as well as many other gifts supporting Jefferson funds and events that improve the lives of patients and families.

Jefferson is grateful to announce a $50,000 matching gift from National Real Estate Development and their parent company, National Real Estate Advisors to the COVID-19 Better Together Fund. All new gifts to the COVID-19 Better Together Fund will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $50,000.

A dedicated partner to the Jefferson community, National Real Estate Development, LLC (National Development), is a real estate development firm focused on developing complex, urban mixed-use projects throughout the country. Since 2013, the team has developed over four million square feet in major markets such as Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. One of National Development’s most notable projects includes East Market in Philadelphia, next to Jefferson’s Center City campus. Like Jefferson, the root of National Real Estate Development’s mission is to improve lives. The team strives to consistently create value through complex project development, delivering tailored projects that are specifically designed to meet the needs of a given market. Jefferson is grateful to partner with National Development in meeting the growing needs of our health care enterprise.

The Nicoletti family has been woven into the fabric of Jefferson for more than a decade. Their generous and steadfast partnership has helped to fulfill our education, research and patient care mission. The family provided the lead gift to name the Nicoletti Kidney Transplant Center, as well as gifts to establish the Nicoletti Family Professorship of Transplant Surgery, the Beatrice F. Nicoletti Professorship of Nephrology and the Nicoletti Family Scholarship. In addition, Mark Nicoletti serves on Jefferson’s Board of Presidential Advisors, Lori Nicoletti Peruto previously served on the Jefferson College of Nursing Advisory Board and Donna Nicoletti Ferrier previously served on the Board of Trustees of Philadelphia University. Donna received the 2019 Leader of Innovation Medal from Thomas Jefferson University’s Celebration of Innovation. Donna presently serves on the Jefferson Institutional Advancement Board for the Jefferson enterprise. In May of 2016, Robert V. Nicoletti posthumously received Jefferson’s highest honor, the President’s Award.

Robert Rosenwasser, MD, MBA, president of the Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience, announced that $750,000 of the sum raised at last year’s Jefferson Gala will be reallocated and match all new gifts 3:1 to the COVID-19 Better Together Fund. Every year, the Jefferson family gathers at the Gala to celebrate achievements, honor heroes, and rejoice together in all things Jefferson. Proceeds from last year’s 17th Annual Gala went to support the Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience. The Farber Institute is at the forefront of neuroscience discovery and treatment of brain disorders. In response to the pandemic that has struck Jefferson and the Philadelphia region, Dr. Rosenwasser and Farber Institute leadership have redirected Gala proceeds to the COVID-19 Better Together Fund, which helps Jefferson employees and students impacted by the coronavirus crisis.

Jefferson is grateful to announce a $25,000 match from Levon and Claudia Nazarian. All new gifts to the COVID-19 Better Together Fund will be matched, dollar-for-dollar, up to $25,000 by Levon and Claudia! 

Longtime benefactors, Claudia and Dr. Nazarian, have been prominent members of the Jefferson family as both employees and donors. Dr. Nazarian completed his fellowship in radiology from Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in 1992, becoming a full-time faculty member at Sidney Kimmel Medical College. He currently serves as Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Radiology as well as Director of Jefferson Ultrasound and Radiology Education Institute. In 2017, Dr. Nazarian became the first physician in Pennsylvania and the first radiologist nationally to perform ultrasound-guided carpal tunnel release (CTR) in the office setting under local anesthetic.

Claudia has dedicated the past three years working in Volunteer Services at TJUH, supporting the patients, family, and friends visiting the hospital. Levon and Claudia have not only dedicated their time, talent, and dedication to Jefferson as employees, but have generously supported the research and programs that advance our mission to improve lives.

Mr. Asplundh is a former president of the Asplundh Tree Expert Co., which was co-founded by his late father and uncles in 1928. The company is an international leader in tree and vegetation management services for the utility industry. Mr. Asplundh had worked at Asplundh Tree Expert Co. for 36 years, serving as president from 1982 until his retirement in 1992.  He continued as Chairman of the Asplundh Foundation. 

Mr. Asplundh has been a longtime benefactor to Abington – Jefferson Health. He and his siblings provided the lead gift for the new Asplundh Cancer Pavilion. Mr. Asplundh also serves on Jefferson’s Institutional Advancement Board, Divisional Board, and Campaign Steering Committee.

Jefferson is grateful to announce a $25,000 challenge for the COVID-19 Better Together Fund from benefactors Herb and Joyce Kean. Be one of the next 50 donors to make a gift and you will unlock their $25,000 gift! 

A Philadelphia native, Dr. Kean received his medical degree from Hanhnemann University in 1956 and completed his residency in Otolaryngology at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in 1960. He specialized in rhinoplasty; with pride he notes Philadelphia Magazine named him the area’s “top nose-job doc” for a decade. The Department’s Center for Facial Aesthetics is named in Dr. Kean’s honor and he holds the rank of Professor Emeritus. He retired from Jefferson and his practice in 1999. 

Joyce earned bachelors and law degrees at Temple University.  She was in private practice for two decades before winning election to the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas in 1997, where she served as a trial judge until retiring in 2006.

Herb and Joyce were honored with the Award of Merit at the 2010 Jefferson Gala.

Prior to that, she was a senior consultant for Cigna, director of recruitment programs and placement at NYU School of Law, and taught international law and politics at St. Joseph’s University. She has served on multiple boards, including the Vickie and Jack Farber Institute for Neuroscience – Jefferson Health.

Kenneth C. Frazier is the chairman of the board and CEO of Merck & Co., Inc. Under his leadership, Merck has expanded investment in research in products that benefit society, and increased philanthropic initiatives. His contributions in the legal, business, and humanitarian fields have been widely recognized.

The Lubert-Estadt Match

Jefferson is grateful to announce a $200,000 match for the Covid-19 Better Together Fund from benefactors Pam Estadt and Ira Lubert. The next $200,000 raised will be matched dollar-for-dollar by Pam and Ira.
 
A native of Newton, New Jersey, Ira co-founded Independence Capital Partners, a family of six private equity and real estate funds, including the highly successful Lubert-Adler Real Estate Partners. He served on the Jefferson Board of Trustees from 2005 to 2012, and was recognized with the prestigious Award of Merit at the 2011 Jefferson Gala. Ira’s generosity has shaped Jefferson in profound ways, from endowing a professorship in cardiology to naming for his parents the Sidney and Ethal Lubert Plaza, a welcoming green space in the center of campus. Ira was previously chair and is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of Penn State University. Pam is a generous supporter of many Philadelphia-area charities, and has been the longtime sponsor of the National Constitution Center’s Liberty Medal Award. She serves as a Trustee of Project H.O.M.E.
