About

Echo 2 Smartpens for the Office for Students with Disabilities & Deaf Services

One of the most important ways that HCC staff help students overcome barriers is by providing students with disabilities access to Livescribe Echo 2 Smartpens.

The Assistive Technology Center, part of the Office for Students with Disabilities & Deaf Services (OSDDS), loans smartpens to students with disabilities who are approved for an accommodation of note taking. However, due to usage, the current inventory of pens is damaged or deteriorating.

Our goal is to raise $2,400 to purchase 20 new smartpens.

The smart pen is more than a recording and note taking device. For those students who the pen is appropriate, it is an assistive technology that empowers them in and out of the classroom. As an alternative to utilizing a peer notetaker, a student using the smart pen owns the note taking process in the classroom and determines the best way to format and access their notes outside of the classroom. Students are trained on the use of the smart pen at the Assistive Technology Center, often by peer assistive technology trainers, and learn to adapt their study behaviors to suit their learning strengths.

Often relying on grant funding, the department needs to replenish the smart pen inventory to make them available to students.
