Dominik Pettey ‘15 loved Gonzaga - his friends, teachers, coaches, and hockey teammates. A leader on the ice, Dom played the game he loved with enthusiasm and pure joy. After his sudden and tragic death on November 1, 2014, his jersey number, 11, was retired by the hockey program.
Dom's memory, inspiration, and legacy live on every day at Gonzaga. At the start of each Gonzaga hockey season, upperclassmen teach new players the importance of being a teammate who puts forth the effort and spirit that Dom possessed in every game. Players stand in a circle, raise their sticks, drop them to the ice and shout his name in tribute.
Shortly after his passing, the Dominik L. Pettey ‘15 Memorial Scholarship Fund was established so that deserving students who would otherwise not be able to afford the cost of tuition can realize their dream of a Gonzaga education. Dom’s scholarship has been a true grassroots effort. Over 3,700 donors have given to the fund -- it has more donors than any other fund in Gonzaga's endowment. Although the average gift size is $111, its current market value stands at just under $900,000.
This year marks the tenth anniversary of Dom's passing, and in his honor, Gonzaga has set an ambitious goal for this year's fundraising drive: Together, let's bring the fund in Dom's name to $1 million. Currently, the Pettey Fund covers full tuition for one deserving Gonzaga student. Reaching $1 million in the fund would allow Gonzaga to add a second Pettey Scholar during the 2025-2026 school year.
We have 11 days to raise $100,000 and push the Dominik Pettey Fund over $1 million, to give more young men the opportunity to excel on Eye Street and appreciate all that Gonzaga has to offer, as Dom did. Please join us today.
