About

GW PPE Factory

As hospitals cope with a shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE) during the COVID-19 pandemic, groups of GW students and faculty from across disciplines have come together to find immediate responses to the needs of health care professionals at GW Hospital. James Huckenpahler, Professor of New Media, Corcoran School of Arts and Design, Alex Cullen, Training Coordinator in the Department of Emergency Medicine, School of Medicine and Health Sciences, and Konstantin Mitic, a biomedical engineering graduate student, School of Engineering & Applied Science, have collaborated to develop and manufacture much needed PPE for workers at GW Hospital and local partners.

Since April, they set up a small factory using (12) 3D printers to print PPE that has delivered over 2,100 face shields, 1,200 filter adaptors, 500 inline viral filtersas well as fulfilling special requests for 99 specialized face shields and 50 plexi shields cut for local ophthalmologists.

Join us online on Thursday, October 22 at 1pm ET to learn more about this project with Professors Rodney Lake and James Huckenpahler!

Help us raise $15,000 to support the team. Your gift can support:

$50 covers the material cost of >dozen face shields
$250 covers the material cost of >60 face shields
$1,000 covers the material cost of 250 face shields
$2,500 adds one-month supply of filament
$15,000 six months supply for 3D printers

Updates
Thank You and GW PPE Factory Update

At a moment when COVID-19 cases are rising dramatically in the US again, we're proud to continue supporting our health care partners who are saving lives every day. Thank you for demonstrating how much you value and believe in our efforts. Your gift has allowed us to keep 3D-printing PPE and donate it to healthcare professionals in the area. In addition, we are working on new products to solve a few daily challenges we face during COVID-19.

We are very excited to announce that we are testing new products with the Emergency Medicine Services departments in Prince William and Fairfax Counties. We discovered that many suction machines (to pull out mucus, saliva, blood, secretions or other fluids clearing the airway for easy breathing) do not have filters and, as a result, they spew infectious materials back into the clinical space. We've prototyped filters for suction canisters that are frequently used in ambulances, and elbow joints that can connect the canisters to other devices. We are fine-tuning the designs and we plan to test it out with the Emergency Medicine Services teams soon.

As GW’s fall semester comes to an end, students from the School of Business Investment Institute's Venture Capital class proposed five potential broad-range solutions to expand the PPE Factory that were not limited to medical supplies, but considered the impact of COVID more holistically. Ideas ranged from internet connectivity solutions for remote students to antiviral fabrics to simple devices for opening doors hands-free! We're still evaluating the practicality of their innovations; but more importantly it's broadened the Factory's thinking about what is possible, and it's challenged GW students to apply their creative abilities to a concrete, urgent problem.

What’s next with your gift? We are almost done relocating our factory to a new location to provide a safe environment without any contamination. We are purchasing more 3D filament, cartridges & materials for the next wave of production while we evaluate ideas generated by the students. We are also considering adding a few more printers that will expand the kinds of materials with which we can create.

We did this - together. Thanks to your support, we are able to keep giving back to our community and allowing GW students to be a part of the journey. Thank you, again.
