Join Del McCoury and friends in a documentary all about DelFest!

This documentary will explore how a music festival, DelFest, and its founder, Del McCoury, are changing the small Appalachian city of Cumberland, MD.

The #deldoc Story

This documentary film highlights how DelFest, a bluegrass music festival, brings hope to the city of Cumberland, MD. Every year, on Memorial Day weekend, the local traffic around the beautiful city of Cumberland, MD fills with RVs and cars packed to the brim with camping supplies. There are people smiling, banjos and fiddles blaring from their speakers, and if you roll down your window, you can hear them hollering “DelYEAHHH!” Throughout this feature length documentary we will journey with Del McCoury as the 12th Annual DelFest unfolds, from setup to breakdown. We will learn why Del chose to host his namesake festival in Cumberland, MD. Festival goers, other featured bands, festival organizers and city officials will be interviewed and will shed light on the details of the festival and the impact it has on individuals and the area. We will explore how this music festival affects the area socially and psychologically as well as economically. We will discover how bluegrass music is traditionally associated with Appalachia and how DelFest reconnects this region to its musical roots. We will explore how the city and county handle this festival in terms of traffic, safety, and maintenance as well as addressing the stereotypes and misconceptions that surround events of this type.

About the makers of #deldoc

I’m Annie Danzi and I am a documentary filmmaker. I have a unique model for making documentaries that incorporates college students as key crew members on professional films. This film, for now known as the “DelDoc,” will give multiple students an experiential learning opportunity that cannot be duplicated in the classroom.

Donations are needed to make this happen!

Your donations will go towards extra film production gear and sd cards and batteries. Also, we plan to hire a drone operator for aerial footage to show the scope of the festival. Your donations will also be helping us survive four days of filming! Such as feeding the crew during our shooting days, the cost of the production RV and generator to charge our batteries and get some zzz’s and keep our equipment safe and dry.

The #deldoc Impact

Aside from the impact that making this film has on the students who get to be involved and my own professional development, there is a much larger impact on the town of Cumberland, MD. This film will shed light on some of this Appalachian city’s challenges and also its potential. We will explore how Del McCoury’s philanthropy is changing the area, strengthening it, and giving it new purpose. And this film will be a DELight for anyone who loves bluegrass, music festivals, Appalachia or Del McCoury himself!
