Our Mission
The Embry-Riddle Sailing Club is a student-run organization on the Daytona Beach campus. Our mission is to promote the sport of sailing through educational programs and by participating in competitions with the Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA).
Our Goal
Our goal is to raise $10,000 to purchase new practice sails for our 12 Flying Juniors (FJ's) and 2 Club 420 sailboats. The Daytona Beach Student Government Association has generously contributed $3,910 to our club towards our goal. We need your support to purchase new sails so the club can provide safer equipment to properly learn to sail and compete. Will you help us reach our goal?
Our Growth Story
Over the past 2 years, our program has gained an overwhelming interest in learning to sail and as well as participating in Intercollegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) regattas. Our team consists of over 35 active members competing and over 100 students that were taught how to sail over the past 4 semesters. As a result, our equipment undergoes heavy use to train new sailors in many types of wind conditions roughly 5 times a week. In addition to the sailing team practicing, our club hosts Learn to Sails & Open Sails to provide students at our university the unique opportunity to learn how to sail.
Within the two last months we have had 6 sets of Flying Junior (FJ) sails tear during practice rendering them unsafe to use, thus limiting the number of sailors that can practice per week. With only six sets of FJ sails remaining, only half our fleet can be used at a time. Our Club 420 sails are over 8 years old and have lost their sail shape which limits sailors to only practicing in heavy wind conditions due to the sails being stretched out over the years.
Without proper sailing equipment such as sails, our club cannot operate at higher capacity due to being limited to 6 FJ's and 1 Laser. With new and higher quality sails we will be able to continue to promote youth sailing through our Learn to Sail programs and allow our team to compete at a more competitive level.
With your help we will be able to continue to grow as a club to allow students to learn and compete with proper equipment.
How you can help
We need your support.
Your donation today will go directly towards the purchase of new practice sails to allow our club to continue Learn to Sails programs and the sailing team to continue to train to compete in ICSA regattas. Your support will allow more students at the university to learn how to sail and compete in the sport of sailing.
Our club would like to thank the Eckerd College Sailing Team for donating their old, used sails for us to continue practicing until we are able to purchase new sails. As seen in the video, we currently sail with Eckerd branded sails so that we are able to accommodate more sailors on the water and continue our Learn to Sail programs.
Will you make a donation in support of the Embry-Riddle Sailing Club today?
Suggested Giving Levels
- Optimist Sailor - $50
- FJ Sailor - $100
- ILCA Sailor - $200
- 470 Sailor - $500
- J/70 Sailor - $1000
*J/70 donors will have the option of having a FJ from our fleet named after them.*
How will donations be used?
- $8,000 - Purchase 14 sets of Practice Sails
- With a new set of practice sails the club and team will be able to continue sailing in all types of wind conditions
- $1,000 - Sail Bags for each set of Practice Sails
- Sail bags significantly prolong the life of the sails when rolled and stored to prevent tears or scuffing
- $1,000 - Rigging
- Jib sheets with the proper thickness are needed for sailors to learn and practice
Additional Projects
If we exceed our goal of $10,000, all additional donations will go towards the following projects. Our current equipment storage does not provide adequate space to store all sails, rudders and life jackets limiting the amount of equipment that can be purchased per semester.
- $7,500 - Storage Trailer
- As our club continues to grow, additional storage space is needed to store equipment such as sails, rudders, and life jackets
- $2,000 - ILCA (Laser) Equipment
- Our 2 Lasers share 1 complete set of Laser parts which limits the club to using 1 Laser at a time. A second dagger board and rudder will allow the club to accommodate more sailors on the water.
