In April, 2023 Embry-Riddle Prescott students launched a liquid fueled rocket, know as Deneb, reaching an altitude of 47,000 feet --- the highest flight for a liquid rocket by an amateur or university team ever. This rocket was designed and built by students over the course of several years and was the culminating project for a group of students in their capstone course. While this rocket was a record setting achievement it had under-performed compared to predictions made based on the design intent of the vehicle.

This undergraduate capstone project aims to bridge the gap in hybrid propulsion knowledge on Embry Riddle’s Prescott campus and create a high-altitude vehicle test bed. Furthermore, the project will establish the necessary procedures, certifications, and ground test hardware to pave the way for future students to fabricate, design, and test hybrid vehicles. Both liquid and solid rocket technology have been advancing on campus while hybrids have been widely overlooked, resulting in a clear gap which limits the rocket program’s competitiveness across all three disciplines. This proposal presents a concise summary of the project’s necessity.

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University's Prescott Campus utilizes demonstrators and vehicles of both liquid and solid propulsion technology to teach course content, offer practical training opportunities, and unique hands-on experience for students. However, the campus currently lacks hybrid propulsion technology that reinforces the course content that is offered on campus as well as a vehicle test bed for future educational demonstrations.

Embry-Riddle’s Rocket Development Lab helps fill a vital role in supporting and enhancing a science, technology, engineering and mathematics education and for foster a passion for STEM Based activities.
