The family and friends of Juliana Tazewell Porter seek to establish a fund in honor of Juliana, Davidson College Class of 2012, and a third year student at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, who tragically died in a car accident on October 4, 2015. Juliana was recently engaged to Josh Yost, a member of the football team and Davidson Class of 2012. This fund will assist Davidson students by providing summer stipends for opportunities in the medical field.
During her time at her beloved Davidson, Juliana was a varsity swimmer and Academic All-Conference student athlete, an Honors Scholar, a member of the National Biological Honor Society and Premedical Honor Society, was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and graduated magna cum laude with a degree in biology. Her accomplishments were many, but these things were not what motivated her. Juliana was possessed of an inner drive, spirit and purpose. She was a person of deep faith, a true and loyal friend, and the type of person who showed grace, compassion and kindness to all she met. By her actions, she let people know that they mattered, and she longed for the day when she could provide comfort, compassion and healing to her patients.
The Davidson athlete must balance the demands of a Division I college sport, and the rigors of one of the top academic institutions in the country. To not only survive, but excel, and also want to pursue a career in service to others in medicine, as Juliana did, is worthy of high praise. This fund hopes, in some small way, to recognize the drive, dedication and service of these exceptional Davidson student athletes.
Juliana was loved by many, and her remarkably positive outlook on life left an indelible mark on countless hearts and minds. She will not be soon forgotten. Juliana’s family and friends hope you will join us in funding this project in her memory, and establishing a lasting legacy in her honor that will continue to serve others as Juliana did during her too short life.
This crowdfunding site is among the primary tools for the Juliana Tazewell Porter Memorial Fund. Gifts may also be sent to the Juliana Porter Memorial Fund at Davidson College, Box 7177, Davidson, NC 28035. If you are interested in making a pledge, or gift of stocks and securities, please contact Director of Planned Giving, Gray Dyer ’96 at grdyer@davidson.edu or 704-894-2478. To date, more than $90,000 has been raised towards an overall goal of $100,000. Thank you for your support.
To all,
The Porter and Yost families are forever grateful to each of you for your kind and generous support of the Juliana Tazewell Porter Memorial Fund. The Fund now stands at over $106,000, and will offer its first grant this summer. Thank you for remembering Juliana, for continuing to share her story with others, and for continuing to give, and encouraging others to give, if you can.
You have helped create an enduring legacy to honor our beautiful daughter, sister, fiancé, future daughter-in-law and dear friend, and to support the place, the students, and the career she loved so much. Just as Juliana or her story in some way touched each of you and moved you to donate, you are now a part of bigger story. You are helping a deserving Davidson student-athlete accept that summer opportunity in the medical field that she or he might otherwise not have been able or willing to accept. We can only imagine how far the ripple effects will go. Thank you for being a part of something that Juliana surely would have whole-heartedly embraced.
With gratitude,
Kent, Ann Byrd, Emmy and Harry Porter, and John, Donna and Josh Yost
To all,
Thank you.
The Porter and Yost families are humbled and gratified by your support for the Juliana Tazewell Porter Memorial Fund at Davidson College. You have joined almost 300 people who have generously contributed through the GiveCampus website, along with many others who have contributed directly to Davidson, to help honor our beautiful daughter, sister, fiancé, future daughter-in-law and friend, and to help future Davidson student-athletes pursue summer opportunities in the medical field. Support has come from individuals, young and old, families, groups and organizations, the business community and, of course, the Davidson community. We cannot thank each and every one of you enough for the outpouring of love and for your support in helping to create this lasting legacy that we know Juliana would have so enthusiastically supported.
Because of your help, the Juliana Tazewell Porter Memorial Fund has raised over $89,000 toward our goal of $100,000. We've made phenomenal progress, but we're not quite there. If you are able to make an additional gift, we would appreciate you doing so. Just as importantly, please share Juliana's story with others. Post the project link on social media, and tell others what we are trying to do. Employers often offer matching gifts; encourage folks to pursue that option. Every gift, no matter how big or small, will help Juliana's dream for a career in medicine live on in other Davidson student-athletes.
With heartfelt thanks,
Kent, Ann Byrd, Emmy and Harry Porter, and John, Donna and Josh Yost
