We invite you to join us in celebrating the remarkable legacy of Ron Lease, who passed away on October 9, 2022. Ron's journey was marked by a profound dedication to academia and a passion for finance.
Ron's educational journey led him to earn both an MBA and a PhD in Finance from Purdue University, setting the foundation for his illustrious career. His academic pursuits began at the University of Utah, where he initially served as a faculty member and later held an esteemed research professorship while also assuming the role of chair of the finance department. Subsequently, Ron continued his academic journey at Tulane University, where he once again held a prestigious research professorship and even took on the role of associate dean. Ultimately, Ron and his wife Judy returned to the University of Utah, where they would later retire from their full-time academic commitments.
Throughout his career, Ron's expertise and passion for teaching took him to various renowned institutions, including Purdue University, the University of Michigan, and the University of Chicago, where he held visiting faculty positions. His dedication to education was widely recognized, with Ron receiving teaching awards at each stop on his academic journey.
Beyond his teaching contributions, Ron served as President of the Financial Management Association from 1992 to 1993 and was honored as an FMA Fellow for his outstanding contributions to the field.
Ron's impact extended to his research, which garnered significant recognition over the past two decades. He co-authored the influential book "Dividend Policy," published by the Harvard Business School Press. In retirement, Ron fulfilled his family's encouragement by chronicling his life story in the autobiography "Sandstone Canyons and Granite Peaks."
Following retirement, Ron and Judy embarked on new adventures, taking part-time positions at the University of Arizona and an international graduate school in Hanover, Germany. Their ultimate retirement destination, Grand Junction, held a special place in Ron's heart, as he had been away from the area for half a century. Ron relished his love for the outdoors, travel, and shared delicious meals with cherished company. He cherished moments with his family, often gathering at their beautiful cabin in Driggs, Idaho. Ron's commitment to his family and close friends, coupled with his distinctive sense of humor, remained a constant presence until the end.
In tribute to Ron's enduring legacy, we aim to establish the Ronald Lease Endowed Memorial Scholarship in his honor. This scholarship will be administered by the David Eccles School of Business and will benefit Eccles students at the University of Utah.
