The Next Dimension in Learning: CSU's 3D Printer Project

At CSU, the Department of Art's faculty and staff share a commitment to providing students with state-of-the art technology that allows them to see their creativity come to life as they become experts in design. As part of this initiative, the Tom Morgan Design Lab facility will continue to enhance the Department of Art curriculum by installing a 3D printing station. This will give students opportunities to acquire skills in 3D design, sculpture, expanded media, digital art and design, ceramics, and other areas of creative research.  The 3D printer will create a platform where students and faculty from various programs can collaborate and create new works.  The technology will also help CSU engage in new educational exchanges with other institutions using digital fabrication equipment to expand and enhance our existing Visiting Artist and Scholars Residency Program. 

Integrating digital technology into our curriculum begins in the first semester of a student’s freshman year with Introduction to Digital Design and continues throughout their program of study.  To make an immediate impact on our current students and prepare for an expanding curriculum in the fall of 2016, the Department of Art aims to raise $8,000 that will allow us to install the 3D printer station before the end of the spring term.
