About

Each year, Case Western Reserve University joins in the global #GivingTuesday movement through #GivingTuesdayatCWRU. Designed to keep the spirit of giving alive during the holiday season,  #GivingTuesday takes place each year following the traditional holiday shopping days of Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This year, #GivingTuesday is Tuesday, Nov. 30.

Through the event, #GivingTuesdayatCWRU offers students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the university an opportunity to support causes affiliated with schools, departments and organizations that allow members of the CWRU community to serve others on a local, national, and global scale.

This year’s causes include:

Advocates for Cleveland Health - The mission of Advocates for Cleveland Health is to improve the health of greater Cleveland’s underserved populations and the Case Western Reserve University campus through screenings, education and advocacy. Members embrace cultural humility and empathy so they may educate themselves and think critically about health disparities. Using their knowledge and skills, they work to develop, advocate for, and become involved in long-lasting solutions that promote health and health equity in the Cleveland community.

Case Amateur Radio Club (W8EDU) - W8EDU is the amateur radio club of Case Western Reserve University. Unlike our friends at WRUW, who broadcast radio for the public to listen to, ham radio operators transmit on the radio to communicate with one another. Ham radio operators make contacts around the world and include many diverse hobby groups.  Your gift will support the maintenance of our soon-to-be-replaced antenna towers as well as ongoing research including our HamSCI work with WWV/H.

Case Rocket Team - Case Rocket Team aims to help students explore hands-on aerospace engineering by providing practical skills in areas such as CAD, manufacturing and programming, regardless of major and prior skill level. New members are educated on rocket science and guided through the National Association of Rocketry’s high-power certification process. Gifts will help support the certification program and allow more students to engage with real engineering outside of the classroom.

Creating Healthy Lives Teaching Kitchen - Serving as the focal point of the planned renovation of the Robbins Building on the main campus of CWRU, the kitchen will be a critical link between the School of Medicine and its surrounding community. Including work stations for up to 48 students, a demonstration area, dedicated pantry, laundry and storage area, and more, the kitchen will serve well over 1,500 students and community members annually and offer a variety of nutrition education and culinary classes for students, health care professionals, and community members.

CWRU EMS - A student-run organization that provides emergency medical assistance to students, faculty, staff and guests of the Case Western Reserve University community, CWRU EMS provides a high standard of free emergency care and transport. Serving the CWRU community by facilitating and providing educational opportunities for the student body, the organization offers stand-by services for major university events, and encourages members to participate in public health-related volunteer and community service work within the greater Cleveland area.

CWRU Film Society - Home to one of the last 35mm projection booths, the CWRU Film Society has been active on campus for over 50 years. Celebrating the art of cinema with public movie screenings each weekend the organization hosts annual events including showings of films such as Casablanca and Rocky Horror Picture Show, the Cleveland Italian Film Festival, and the annual Science Fiction Marathon—what is believed to be the longest-running genre movie marathon in the United States. Your gift will support programming, the student projectionist program, and preserving the art of film.

CWRU for Autism Acceptance - CWRU for Autism Acceptance provides athletic opportunities for children on the autism spectrum, supports families in the Cleveland community, and promotes education, awareness and acceptance of autism. Gifts will support the Sparties Running Program for children on the autism spectrum and their siblings.

CWRU Habitat for Humanity - Working to further Habitat International's mission and ideals, CWRU Habitat for Humanity raises awareness and support among the campus community by recruiting people dedicated to fighting substandard housing for life. Gifts will support Help Build Hope—a program in which the group builds the walls of a three-bedroom house for a deserving partner family. This event allows the group to easily engage student volunteers as all building occurs on campus before the walls are transported to the construction site.

CWRU Kids Against Hunger - The CWRU chapter of a national, nonprofit humanitarian organization, Kids Against Hunger provides fully nutritious food to impoverished children and families around the world. The packaged meals they provide include a stable nutritional base from which recipients can move their families from starvation or food insecurity to self-sufficiency. The Cleveland chapter is a student-run organization dedicated to reducing the problem of hunger in Cuyahoga County through partnerships with the Greater Cleveland Food Bank and local soup kitchens. Your support will allow CWRU students to do more for the people in our community who need it.

Delta Theta Phi - Delta Theta Phi is a professional legal fraternal organization committed to fostering lifelong friendships and professional affiliations through legal education, international networking, and mutual respect. The goal of DTP is to perpetuate in every member the application of the highest standards of personal integrity, diligence, candor and trust, of individual responsibility, of respect for law, and rights and property of others. Your support will help shape a new generation of lawyers dedicated to the highest ethical and professional standards of conduct in the study, practice, and teaching of the law.

Expanding Horizons Initiative - The College of Arts and Sciences is advancing the next generation of leaders and innovators through the Expanding Horizons Initiative, which supports undergraduate and graduate students in the process of conducting hands-on research, scholarship, and creative expression. Faculty propose and implement peer-reviewed, donor-funded projects that allow them to work side-by-side with students, providing them with important mentoring, artistic, and training opportunities.

First CWRU - Support first generation college students at Case Western Reserve University through First CWRU. Your gift will support the organization’s yearly scholarship—allowing first generation students the opportunity to continue pursuing a higher education.

Global Medical Brigades - Global Medical Brigades is a campus organization that allows students to work with in-country staff and physicians to run mobile health care clinics in developing countries. Students gain global awareness and humanitarian skills while providing basic healthcare. Your support will provide students with food, housing and travel as a part of the brigade in May 2022.

Health Advocacy Organization - Physicians have a strong tradition of advocacy to improve the health of their patients. However, curricula on the political determinants of health and methods of enacting political change are limited. The Health Advocacy Organization is trailblazing innovative curricula and funding student research to work with community partners on scientific approaches to improve the health of our community. Your support empowers students to address health disparities through political action on social and economic determinants to improve population health.

International Student Support Fund - The International Student Support Fund provides financial support for CWRU’s international students during times of crisis. International students face unique challenges rooted in being legally present in the United States as non-citizens. Many international students have experienced financial difficulties as a result of the pandemic—including unexpected travel costs or additional room and board expenses for those unable to return home. The fund helps address these unique needs.

Interprofessional and Interdisciplinary Education and Research -The Office of Interprofessional and Interdisciplinary Education and Research enables CWRU faculty, staff, students and university affiliate partners to achieve higher impact through effective teamwork. The office offers formal coursework on teamwork skills; sponsors network-building interdisciplinary and interprofessional events; and provides team education, consultation, and coaching services.

Law School Student Support Fund - The Student Support Fund meets students' emergency needs. Last year, the law school provided over $20,000 in support.

LGBT Student Urgent Need - The CWRU LGBT Center provides support and advocacy for LGBT individuals by offering an empowering atmosphere as well as events, groups, and resources for the LGBTQ community and their allies. Unfortunately, many LGBT students lack the financial support they need to be successful, often due to being abruptly cut off from family monetary assistance because they are LGBT. These students can struggle to cover expenses, ranging from physician copays and ID gender marker changes to basics such as food and transportation. Through your gift, you can help the LGBT Center directly address these students’ needs and improve their quality of life.

Mandel School Student Emergency Fund - Jane Pancher Carson Endowed Fund - Mandel School students choose social work as a career path because of their devotion and desire to be of service to those in need. As the pandemic continues to cause some students financial distress, the Jane Pancher Carson Student Emergency Fund provides emergency funds for fundamental needs including food and emergency travel.

Momentum Scholarship Fund – The Office of Multicultural Affairs works to develop an inclusive CWRU community—one that supports all students, respects and celebrates their identities, and facilitates their success. Each year, the office provides student scholarships to students in need. By supporting the Momentum Scholarship Fund, you will help students cover expenses related to tuition, study abroad, research opportunities, and professional conferences to enhance their educational experience at CWRU.

Partners in Health Engage - Through advocacy and community building, CWRU Partners in Health Engage seeks to bridge the gap between local and global health access. Members meet with congressional representatives and local leaders, organize roundtable discussions with community experts, and stand in solidarity with other justice-oriented organizers to address social, political, and economic issues affecting people within our Cleveland community and beyond. Your support will help Partners in Health Engage compensate community members and experts for their time and plan educational events.

PERIOD @ CWRU - Advocating for menstrual care on CWRU’s campus and in the Cleveland community, PERIOD @ CWRU aims to normalize menstruation for all students, regardless of gender identity—securing menstrual products for those in need, providing education, and empowering students to raise awareness about the issue of period poverty and stigma surrounding menstruation. Your gift will provide menstrual products to those in need throughout the Cleveland community.

Physical Resource Center - A free second-hand store and food pantry, the CWRU Physical Resource Center provides goods to students in need. With the help of volunteers, the center has served hundreds of students and distributed thousands of items, including textbooks, winter jackets, kitchen supplies and more. Your support will help sustain the center and remove barriers to student success.

Project Sunshine - A service organization that focuses on bringing a sense of normalcy to children facing medical challenges, Project Sunshine creates events for children at University Hospitals and Ronald McDonald House. Your gift will support the planning and implementation of events designed to improve the hospital experience of young children.

School of Dental Medicine Student Scholarships - Student scholarships are a vital recruitment tool to ensure the School of Dental Medicine has the most qualified and diverse class. By supporting the School of Dental Medicine Scholarship Fund, you will not only benefit a student today, but students for generations to come.

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) -The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers aims to provide support and empower underrepresented Latinx/Hispanic students in STEM fields. By working to provide a strong, supportive network of peers who can help enhance the college experience and inspire others to strive for greatness, the Society focuses on improving the retention of students in STEM through academic, professional, and personal development efforts. Your gift will help provide a variety of networking, mentorship, and outreach opportunities to aid students in their success as well as establish a sense of community on campus (nuestra familia!)

We participate in year-round education, student engagement, and philanthropic endeavors aimed at eliminating childhood illnesses and supporting our local Children's Miracle Network Hospital, UH Rainbow Babies and Children's Hospital. Your support will us continue supporting local children and continuing our outreach mission to the CWRU and Cleveland community, and to ultimately putting an end to childhood illness. Help us Change Kids’ Health!

Stephanie Tubbs-Jones Award - The Stephanie Tubbs-Jones Award recognizes an underrepresented undergraduate CWRU student for significant contributions to campus life, scholarship and community service. These three characteristics were demonstrated by Tubbs-Jones, a CWRU alumna and five-term member of congress who was the first African-American woman to represent Ohio in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Student Run Health Clinic - An entirely student-run organization that offers high-quality, compassionate health care to underserved populations within the Greater Cleveland community, the Student Run Health Clinic provides health-profession students with clinical practice and mentorship opportunities at the earliest stages of their careers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the clinic helped administer over 23,000 COVID-19 vaccine doses in the Greater Cleveland area—with students administering over 5,000. As it transitions back to a routine clinic, your support will help ensure the continuation of services to the community.

The Black Student Union - The umbrella organization for African American Society, African Student Association, National Society of Black Engineers, the Brotherhood and the Sisterhood, the Black Student Union unifies students of the African Diaspora on campus. Your support fosters a welcoming community for Black students on campus, advocates on their behalf  in times of need, and creates a strong network among Black students, staff and faculty.

The Observer - CWRU’s independent, award-winning student newspaper for the last 53 years, The Observer reports news affecting or involving students and provides an editorial forum for the university’s community. From accounting to engineering and student government to residence life, staff members represent the wide array of academic and extracurricular interests that make CWRU one of the best schools in the nation. Your support will allow The Observer to continue providing campus with the highest-quality news.

UpliftCWRU - A student-run volunteer organization that combats food insecurity, UpliftCWRU employs Swipe Out Hunger, an initiative that donates meal swipes to students in need. Gifts to UpliftCWRU on #GivingTuesday will go directly to Swipe Out Hunger to purchase and donate meals.

Voices for Reproductive Health - A student organization affiliated with Planned Parenthood Generation Action, Voices for Reproductive Health exists to educate the community about reproductive health, rights and justice. Activities include attending protests, bringing guest speakers to campus and spreading information about reproductive health, rights, and justice across campus. Your gift supports these efforts and other programming.

Women in Science Engineering Roundtable (WISER) - The Women in Science and Engineering Roundtable aims to promote the inclusion and success of all women pursuing a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) related career at Case Western Reserve University through leadership, mentorship, and outreach. Your gift provides opportunities to build leadership and professional skills, take part in community outreach, and experience mentoring to support student success in male-dominated STEM fields.

Yarn Arts Club - The Yarn Arts Club aims to practice and teach knitting and crocheting at CWRU and supports the community through the donation of handmade items.
