Our students are artists. We help them achieve their dreams.

You can be part of that story.

Rachel's Story

As an aspiring artist growing up in Maryland, I used to dream about moving across the country to attend CalArts. Now, years later as a student, the reality of the experience is even richer and more fulfilling than I imagined.

Being a multidisciplinary artist and animator, it’s important to me to experiment across traditional boundaries in the arts. At CalArts, I have the opportunity to regularly collaborate with students and faculty from across schools and programs—from music to theater and beyond—something that has opened my eyes and brought my practice to new levels.

My experiences have also extended far beyond my own practice. I’ve participated in the Sony Pictures Media Arts Program, part of CalArts’ Community Arts Partnership (CAP), where I’ve taught animation, storytelling, and character development to middle and high school students—many like I was at their age, hungry to learn as much as possible.

CalArts has helped me develop, both personally and artistically, in ways that are far beyond what I ever expected. As a first-generation Asian American from a single-parent household, I’m proud of what I have accomplished through my hard work. The generosity from the CalArts’ donor community helps to amplify what I have achieved by bolstering the Institute’s unique and creative environment.

You have helped to make CalArts what it is for student-artists like me and set us up for success. For that, I am so grateful.

As one of the 94% of CalArtians who receive financial assistance from scholarships, support from our community plays an even more significant role in my development as an artist. I hope you will consider a gift to help CalArtians like me continue on my amazing journey as an artist.

With gratitude,

Rachel Shin

Our community of artists needs your support

As a member of the CalArts community, you understand the dedication and creative journeys of passionate artists like Rachel. You know how important it is for students to have the resources that they need to engage and develop in their practice.

The CalArts Fund provides this essential, unrestricted support to the Institute, enabling us to achieve some of our highest priorities, including:

  • Awarding critical scholarship support to students, including more than $21 million of institutional financial aid in 2020-21.
  • Providing a broad array of educational and support services to students.
  • Assisting our faculty in ways that ensure they are providing innovative instruction.

A gift of $1,000 or more provides you membership in Friends of CalArts (FoCA), a collective of alumnx, families, and friends of the Institute who are dedicated to supporting our mission through annual gifts. FoCA members enjoy enhanced access and engagement opportunities with internationally recognized leaders in the world of visual and performing arts.

As our students prepare to head back to campus this fall, you can make a difference.

Help us provide students like Rachel with the support that they need to achieve their dreams as artists. Your gift now—regardless of the amount—will make an important impact.
