Dear PCM Friends & Supporters,

I am excited to share with you that this November marks the 50th Anniversary of Protestant Campus Ministry at Bloomsburg University! Since 1970 PCM has had a presence on BU’s campus nurturing students in faith, growing Christian leaders, providing pastoral care, and serving the Bloomsburg community.

Our ministry to young adults is as important as ever! In these uncertain times we have not stopped offering vital pastoral support, authentic faith community, and vocational discernment tools to students, even if primarily via Zoom.  In fact, as I’m sure many of you have experienced in your lives, we are seeing God at work in new ways through and amidst the challenges. Here are some examples:

  • From the time campus went virtual last Spring, 15 of our PCM alumni have reengaged with us, attending weekly Main Event and Jesus & Java Zooms, encouraging and supporting our current students as they struggled in adjusting to the new anxieties that Covid-19 brought, as well as finding much needed community themselves.
  • We have extended our ministry to include summer and winter breaks by using Zoom. Our recent alumni, including Craig Bond and Tim Blaine, both of whom are now in seminary, led a weekly series on J.R.R. Tolkien and Christianity for alumni and current students over the summer via Zoom which was well attended and included authentic connecting, laughter, and spiritual insight.  And we have plans for a special Advent series in collaboration with the Susquehanna Conference (UMC) over winter break.
  • I have had the opportunity to reach out on campus by offering “stand-alone” vocation exploration and spiritual wellness workshops via Zoom in collaboration with Alumni and Professional Development’s CLE leadership program. Eight new students attended our “Introduction to Discernment” workshop via Zoom last week where I shared with them tools and wisdom for making important life decisions.
  • PCM is listed in BU’s new “Husky Success” portal, which is a place where students can access various resources and supports on campus and set up appointments to meet via Zoom. I am set up for BU students to meet with me for pastoral care or vocational discernment.

So as we celebrate our 50 years of ministry at BU, I ask for your prayers and financial support for our next 50 years!

We continue to depend more and more on the support of donors like you, as less funds are available to the regional denominational bodies that support campus ministry.

Your gift - of any amount - will help us continue to grow Christian leaders for the church and the world and provide much needed spiritual support and community to students struggling in these polarizing and isolating times. Give in multiples of $50 to celebrate with us!

A gift of $50 can send a student on a leadership retreat. $150 can provide Bibles, devotionals, or other gifts to five student leaders and graduating seniors. $250 will match grant funds to provide six Vocation Exploration Circle sessions to 3-10 students or six stand-alone vocation or spiritual wellness workshops. $500 - $1,500 will help cover speaking and travel fees for a guest Vocation Exploration Speaker.

Excited about the possibilities God has in store.

With much gratitude and joy in this calling,

Rev. Jill Young, Protestant Campus Minister
