Birmingham-Southern College has a proud tradition in athletics dating back more than 100 years, to its origins as Southern University in Greensboro, Alabama. Football was introduced at Southern in the 1890's – although the faculty feared the sport would encourage "rowdyism and ungentlemanly behavior." And while the 1909 Southern baseball team never scored a run, the enthusiasm of the student body ensured there was no turning back. Since those early days, the BSC Panthers have continued to compete for glory and now fields teams 22 men's and women's teams and competes in the Southern Athletic Association. And contrary to the concerns of those long-ago professors, BSC's 450 student-athletes distinguish themselves off the field as well, with consistently high academic success across all sports. Over the last seven years, an average of 430 student-athletes have maintained a 3.0 GPA.
