About

When you give to our English fund, you are extending the literary and artistic horizons of our students, developing the Minnesota arts and literary scene, and contributing to the future of American literature itself. Our English students come from many backgrounds, are interested in many different kinds of literature, and write creatively themselves. This 10-year campaign (we're now in year five) is raising funds for classroom visits from writers and other speakers as well as campus-wide presentations that we would like to sponsor with other Augsburg groups. In the past, we have partnered with Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies to bring alumna Anne Panning back to campus for a reading of her memoir, Dragonfly Notes. We also partnered with QIPoC to bring poet and anthologist Chris Soto in for a reading. To enrich our students' engagement with literature--as readers and as writers themselves--we want to establish a $25,000 fund over ten years. Our aim is to raise $3000 a year--$500 for current use and $2500 to build the reserve, which is our priority. However, we have had such fantastic support, that we are already close to our goal! Can we raise the final amount to fully endow this fund this year? With your help, we can!

Lots of Poetic Homework!

It looks as if I'll be writing a chapbook of haiku, sonnets, ghazals, pantoums, villanelles, and other verses for our very generous donors. We're two days in and almost at the halfway mark for this year's goal.

The English Department deeply appreciates whatever you can give and, as I've promised, my last poem of the season will recognize and be dedicated to all our donors. Every one of you is making such a big difference in the learning and lives of our students.

Thank you!

Poetic "Prizes" for Donors

This year, to celebrate my retirement and our proximity to the $25,000 needed to endow the Augsburg English Department Speaker & Event Fund (a little less $4500 shy and way ahead of our original ten-year plan), I will be writing poems in honor of donors who give $50 or more. These will be real poems about real “stuff” but dedicated to donors. Here’s the plan:

  • $50 = Haiku Level: I’ll thank you with a haiku or other short formal or free-verse poem.
  • $100 = Sonnet Level: You’ll be thanked with an original sonnet, ghazal, or pantoum.
  • $250 = Villanelle Level: Wow! Your generosity deserves something special.
  • $500 = Sestina Level: You hit the jackpot: An original poem in my favorite form!

Just to be clear: We appreciate ALL donations in ANY AMOUNT. So my last act this year will be to write an original poem dedicated to everyone who donates to the English Department’s 2021 fundraiser. Many of you give year after year and this is our way of saying thanks.

The poems will be emailed and likely posted on FB no later than 1 Jan 2022.  I'll start writing as the first donations come in.

Please put me to work!
