title: GiveCampus Designation Groups API V2
  description: |-
The Designation Groups API allows your school to securely retrieve and manage designation group data in JSON format. A designation group is a tree of nodes: a school-level root group can contain child groups and individual designations, nested up to 10 levels deep.
Security

Every API request must have a bearer token attached in the Authorization header.

These tokens are generated within the GiveCampus UI and only school administrators with super-user permissions can generate and manage them. You will choose this initial set of “full” administrators during the GiveCampus onboarding process.

All API responses will be delivered over a secure HTTPS connection, and a TLS version of 1.2 or 1.3 is required.

GiveCampus maintains detailed logs of API access and can provide them to your team upon request.

Request Lifecycle

The API delivers data asynchronously using a request-and-poll pattern:

Submit your request — Call the endpoint with your desired parameters. You'll receive a
request_id
and a
status
of
in_progress
.

Poll for results — Call
/results/{request_id}
every 2–5 seconds until
status
changes to
completed
(or
error
).

Download your data — When complete, the response includes a
download_url
containing a JSON array of objects matching the model defined below.

Most requests complete within a few seconds.

The tree-based workflow (read → modify → write)

Updating a designation group is a full-state reconciliation of one root group's tree. Rather than sending individual add/edit/remove operations, you send the entire desired shape of the tree and GiveCampus reconciles the stored tree to match it. The recommended workflow is:

GET the current tree — Call
GET /designation_groups
and download the results. Each item is a root group with its full nested
children
array. Every node includes its
id
.

Modify the tree locally — Edit node attributes, add new child nodes, remove nodes, or restructure the hierarchy in the JSON you downloaded. See "Node identity semantics" below for exactly how each change is interpreted.

PUT the desired state — Call
PUT /designation_groups
with the modified tree(s). GiveCampus updates, creates, and soft-deletes nodes as needed so the stored tree matches what you submitted.

Node identity semantics

On a
PUT
, each node's
id
field determines what happens to it:

Node with an
id
→ updated. The
id
must belong to the subtree of the root group being submitted. Only attributes that actually changed are written.

Node without an
id
→ created as a new node under its parent.

An existing node that is absent from the submission → soft-deleted. Any node currently stored in the submitted root's subtree that you do not include is removed (along with its descendants).

Create mode (POST) vs. update mode (PUT)

POST builds a brand-new tree. No node may include an
id
field — every node is created. Submitting an
id
is rejected.

PUT reconciles an existing tree. The top-level
id
identifies the existing root group to reconcile and is required. Within that subtree, node identity semantics (above) apply.

Omitted root-level groups are left untouched

Reconciliation is scoped to only the root groups you submit. The
PUT
body is an array, and each element reconciles its own root group's subtree independently. Any root-level designation group that you do not include in the request is left entirely untouched — the absence rule (soft-delete) applies only within the subtree of a root group you actually submit, never across root groups you omit.

Nodes that are in use

If a node is currently in use by a campaign or giving form, it is protected:

It cannot be soft-deleted (you cannot remove it from the tree, and the root group cannot be deleted via
DELETE
).

Only
priority
,
visible
, and
position
may be edited. Changing any other attribute (e.g.
name
,
designation_id
, or moving it to a new parent) is rejected.

Testing

You can use the tools below to see responses from the API to understand how to build your own implementation.

You will see the URLs and paths necessary to make your own API calls.

Click the Authorize button below to enter in your API Key in the following format:
Bearer API_TOKEN

After authorized, you can click the close button in the authorization modal to start making requests

Expand the Designation Groups section below to see the available parameters that you can leverage to filter API results.

After requesting a subset of designation groups, you will receive a
request_id
. Copy that ID and then use that in the
results
section to see the progress of your request and to see the download URL once the request is completed.

In the routes section below, there is a "Try it out" button. After authenticating, you can select from the available parameters, and you will see the curl request performed, the results of your request, and any errors if applicable.

GiveCampus Proprietary and Confidential
