Peter Klopfer, beloved co-founder of Carolina Friends School and distinguished Duke University Professor Emeritus of Biology, passed away on June 5, 2026. In 1962, guided by his Quaker faith, he helped establish Carolina Friends as one of the region's first racially integrated schools. Grounded in simplicity, intellectual curiosity, and stewardship, Peter remained deeply connected to the school throughout his life, serving on the Board of Trustees and returning to classrooms to mentor generations of students.
Peter’s impact extended far beyond the classroom into science, community building, and civil rights. As a pioneering ethologist, he co-founded the Duke Lemur Center, and his passion for running led him to found the Godiva Track Club. His commitment to justice resulted in Klopfer v. North Carolina, the landmark 1967 U.S. Supreme Court case that extended the Sixth Amendment right to a speedy trial to state courts.
His legacy lives on through the vibrant community and institutions he helped build. To honor Peter's memory, gifts can be made to Carolina Friends School to help carry forward his vision for future generations; for details or special arrangements, contact Director of Advancement Office Deb Feinberg at 919-383-6602 ext. 223 or dfeinberg@cfsnc.org.
