Agnes Tyrrell (1846-1883) was a virtuoso pianist and genius composer in the late nineteenth century. She is mostly unknown: illness shortened her life and kept her from the concert tours that would have made her famous, and publishers weren’t ready to take a woman composer seriously. But she got the rigorous training her extraordinary talent deserved, and she wrote about 300 pieces including choral music, a symphony, an opera, and dozens of songs and piano pieces.
These pieces exist because, despite so many obstacles, Agnes wrote them, and her sister believed in them, and librarians cared for them. Now her music is coming to light after 150 years as silent manuscripts.
Agnes’s music is breathtaking. Her story is full of hope and grit, and you can be part of it. Help us bring her gorgeous music to the world. Learn more about Agnes at Jocelyn Loves Agnes Substack and jocelynswigger.com/agnes.
