Being part of the SOCIAL Neurobiology Lab was the highlight of my undergraduate experience at ASU. With mentorship from Dr. Jessica Verpeut and the exceptional graduate students in the lab, I had the privilege of participating in the cutting edge of neuroscientific research. The persistent atmosphere of collaboration, camaraderie, and kindness within the lab was truly motivating, and I was consistently inspired by the other members of the team. During my time in the lab, I gained not only research skills and academic experience, but also the realization that I was truly pursuing my passion; a realization I would not have reached without my time in the SOCIAL Neurobiology Lab.

The SOCIAL Neurobiology Lab was an instrumental part of my undergraduate experience. Everyone was welcoming and passionate about their research, and I looked forward each week to working on projects that challenged me personally and academically. Research is one of the most rewarding opportunities at ASU, and I could not have chosen a better team to be a part of.

As a first-generation college student, I entered research unsure whether I truly belonged in science. The SOCIAL Neurobiology Lab changed that. I was trusted with meaningful, independent work, challenged to think critically, and supported through every setback. With Dr. Verpeut’s mentorship, I was able to design and lead my own honors thesis project and earned multiple travel grants to present at various conferences. That work was recognized as the department’s Outstanding Thesis and earned me the Dean’s Medal, which was an achievement I never imagined possible when I first joined the lab.

More importantly, the lab taught me how to think like a scientist: how to ask rigorous questions, troubleshoot complex experiments, and connect neuroscience to real-world clinical impact. The foundation I built in the Verpeut Lab prepared me to continue conducting high-level research at Mayo Clinic today!

My involvement in Dr. Verpeut’s SOCIAL Neurobiology Lab was beyond pivotal to my research trajectory. As an international student facing significant financial hardships, Dr. Verpeut embraced my obstacles as if they were her own. She guided me through securing scholarships, fellowships, internships, and additional financial opportunities, which ensured my continued education. Now, I am a PhD student—something that would likely not have been attainable if it weren’t for Dr. Verpeut.

The SOCIAL Neurobiology Lab not only taught me invaluable research and personal skills, but ultimately taught me how to strive despite obstacles and treat them as opportunities to grow. Graduating from ASU left me with immense gratitude for Dr. Verpeut’s mentorship, but also immense optimism, knowing that the lab will keep generating unique talent and similar students, who, despite all the obstacles they might face, are equipped with the determination to keep moving forward and embracing every challenge.
