The F.Y.E. Foundations program is grounded in the historical legacy of the African American Cultural Center and the visionary work of Drs. Witherspoon and Clark, who – alongside dedicated staff, faculty, and students – helped welcome students to NC State through the Afrikan American Symposium. This symposium is widely remembered as one of the earliest orientation experiences available to students as they began their time at the university. More than an introduction to campus, it fostered connection by placing students in relationships with mentors, advisors, and, most importantly, with one another. While F.Y.E. Foundations does not seek to replicate this experience, it honors its enduring intention: to provide a grounding space where students can find their edge – recognizing that the work of beginning, belonging, and becoming happens first year, every year as students grow into scholars, innovators, and thought leaders at NC State and beyond.
