• In 1994, Bernard L. Richardson, Ph.D., dean of the Chapel, created and directed the first Howard University Alternative Spring Break (HUASB) trip. During this inaugural service trip, students served in Lumberton, North Carolina after a devastating flood.
  • In 2006, HUASB expanded to New Orleans, Louisiana, led by a first-year student, to provide crisis relief service efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The students’ work garnered national attention, and they were named ABC World News, “People of the Week.”
  • In 2018, HUASB students served in 14 communities, domestically and internationally, following Hurricanes Harvey & Irma.
  • In 2024, over 1400 HUASB students served in 20 domestic communities across the country.
