Having rustic accommodations at the Finnegan M. Woodruff Mountain Center for forty-plus students will provide year-round access for hundreds of Bowdoin students each year, providing the learning and benefits that come from spending a night in the mountains with a small group of your peers, engaging face-to-face, and then taking part together in a physically active adventure the next day.
More than 650 individual students (approximately 33 percent of all Bowdoin students) participate in off-campus BOC trips each year. The ability to provide comfortable spaces for eating and sleeping will allow the BOC to expand our ability to provide impactful off-campus activities for all Bowdoin students. The infrastructure we envision at this mountain basecamp (insulated, well-lit bunkhouses and much more) will significantly enhance our ability to encourage a diverse and less confident group of students to experience the outdoors in meaningful ways and grow to appreciate Maine beyond the Bowdoin campus.
While the property is already useful in its present condition, Bowdoin is investigating the design and construction of facilities that would enhance programming and allow multiple groups to use the site in all four seasons.
